What raise should I offer on-the-books nanny of two-year old twins? We paid her $15/hour for six months, then raised it to $16. That was a year ago - do we raise it a full dollar to $17/hour? And would that mean we have to go up to $18 the following year (when we may reduce her hours because of preschool)? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Just fyi, you're not going to be reducing hours for preschool, at least not at a private NYC preschol. So many days off and half days, etc. Not worth it to scramble for the extra coverage. You just pay FT and give your nanny extra stuff to do [ Reply | More ]

OP: thanks, but in that case I think we'd have to switch nannies bc ours has made it clear she has no interest in broader housekeeping duties or cooking beyond taking care of the kids' food and clothes. [ Reply | More ]

You can shift the hours on some days, so you get evening babysitting, if she'd do that. Anyway, maybe give 50 cents an hour plus a monthly metro card? Advantage there is that you (legally) don't have to pay taxes on the metro card. [ Reply | More ]

Guess what? Job responsibilities change. If she doesn't want the new responsibilities she can find a new job. That's how it works in the real world. [ Reply | More ]

Truth be told I didn't give my nanny any extra duties, and just paid her as I had been paying her (no raise) even with all the downtime. [ Reply | More ]
