In our pre-K, there were kids who scored high on the G&T tests who seem socially immature and generally wild, and others who have been reading for a year and are very articulate who didn't test in. Not slagging any particular kid, but has anyone else noticed this and why do you think that is? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don't agree. There is however a pattern of high scorers from smart/well-read parents (not the same as parents who make more money). [ Reply | More ]

I know a few kids who made second round at Hunter and didn't even get a 90 on the OLSAT/BSRA. [ Reply | More ]

I think this a lie fabricated by parents whose DC scored poorly. [ Reply | More ]

Whatever. 2 kids in our preschool who I know for a fact were at Hunter 2nd round and my friend's child who I also know was there. My kid was too young to test - why would I lie? [ Reply | More ]

I think the kids who get good, generous and coaxing SB testers test above their intellectual level frequently in NYC. I think the olsat is harder for a kid who needs lots of encouragement and prompting as it is not allowed. the testers are pretty objective and do not repeat and explain. I think that accounts for the few with the pattern you describe. df works for the doe, and said that by and large kids have scores within a couple of percentile points on these tests. ^the wild/precocious kids who read at 2nd grade levels in his class (etc. etc) all seemed to get low 90s, fwiw. [ Reply | More ]

we had the opposite. the kids who were generally the smartest did the best. I was actually very impressed by how it worked out. seemed uncanny. [ Reply | More ]

I think all of this is bs. I just spoke with a friend who is brilliant and kids are too. They bombed this test. I don't think these tests are any indication of intelligence. They only indicate who is a good test taker. [ Reply | More ]

you sound very bitter. the smartest kids in our public ended up with a 99 on the test. some did very well in placing to a G&T. you have no idea how this test measures up, but boy do you sound bitter about it. [ Reply | More ]

Not bitter. Not even here yet. Just think all of you sound nuts and I would rather put mine in regular K than submit to all this crazyness at such a young age. School should be fun. [ Reply | More ]

multiple intelligences. Test didn't accommodate for the type of brilliance your friend and his/her kids exhibit. But doesn't mean the test only indicates good test taking skills (what are these skills in a 4yo)? [ Reply | More ]

NP: This is very true. And now that the test is known, people can prep their kids. The program will become ever whiter and richer. I believe the BoE people were well-intentioned, but they are destructive idiots. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is preppable, but so are the other tests. Its the reason so many nyc kids are scoring in the high 90s on erbs and sb. [ Reply | More ]

but maybe prepping will get you a few extra points...so an 87 to 92 perhaps. but no way to get a 99 that easily. [ Reply | More ]

Welllll, OK. But since 98s don't get in, prepping will make the difference between a smart, unprepped kid and a smart, prepped kid. [ Reply | More ]

my socially immature, wild kid can't read yet but scored a 99. He's a smart guy, just not interested in reading yet. Not sure how other kids in his class did and don't know that any of them are reading yet. [ Reply | More ]

I've noticed that mom's of girls are quick to dismiss boys as stupid because they wild and socially immature. Also I don't think early reading is or ever has been a measure of intellegence. If it were, then these 'tests' (ERB, SB, OLSAT) would have a reading component vs just meausres of 'reading readiness'. Parents of early readers tend to assume their dc is brighter than their non-reading peers. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: Was referring to the OLSAT, not the SB or other tests. It was just odd that you couldn't predict who would do well and who wouldn't. Some kids you'd think would certainly score in did not (like the reader, and btw, there was just one), and others were like, Well, OK, I guess she has some hidden talents. Then again, a few kids you'd expect to score in did. Just curious. [ Reply | More ]
