you tell them what you will offer in the advert. They will tell you what they want. Be very prepared re vacation/sick/ federal holidays. Have a printed sheet. We could not give Good Friday and our first nanny said it was a problem, then took of sick- so you need to think about scenarios. $12 is basic per hour (low). Maybe offer a 1-3 month trial . ita about the holiday issue. I follow a federal reserve board schedule and do not have Good Friday and several "common" holidays off from work. But I do get Veteran's Day off. Need to spell that out upfront. [ Reply | More ]

Plan on paying $13 to $15 an hour. My nanny asked for $10 an hour. But I knew that as soon as she started working, she would meet other nannies and learn that she was being underpaid. Then she would quit or ask for more money. Easier to just offer her the market rate upfront. [ Reply | More ]

can i ask you why you want a nanny instead of putting dc in daycare where it is regulated by the city/state and there are checks and balances in place to ensure proper care? [ Reply | More ]

probably b/c there are waiting lists for daycare, but there are a few in your area that you should get on the list with. I am looking at Our Kids, Your Kids and Tutor Time. It's cheaper in the long run and good for socialization [ Reply | More ]

OR: First, my hours. I don't work 9-5 so I didn't have many options for daycare. Second, I have been on the waitlist for the one daycare in my area that has extended hours for almost 2 years now. Third, I like that my ds is cared for at home. If he was in daycare, I would have to take off from work everytime he had the slightest cold because daycare wouldn't take him. [ Reply | More ]

all good points. if you don't have very regular hours, daycare can be tough. i'm shocked how early most of them close...usually 5:45pm. [ Reply | More ]

And if you tell people that you need daycare past 6 PM, they assume that you have them in daycare for 12+ hours per day (5 days a week) and accuse of you being an absentee parent. Not everyone has to be in the office at 7:30! [ Reply | More ]

np: just sticking in my two cents. here on the uws, there isn't a great selection of daycare with openings. and the toddler i know in daycare seem overly aggressive, often injured, and just have bad manners and habits all around. we've been very happy wiht our excellent nanny, and my dcs get plenty of time with other kids.
