Shangrila? I am desperately seeking a place to go for vacation in August with DH & 3yo DD. I'd like it to be near a beach, swimming pool, the great outdoors so we can hike and canoe but still not be too outdoorsy. I don't feel like camping for a week. I want amenities and culture! and not too far from NYC, at least on the East Coast. ps hoping to get pregnant [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Lake Naomi or one of the other lakes in Pa. I know it is an imported beach, but the rest is there, and very close [ Reply | More ]

Check out this link for my place in Cape May, N.J. If I could, I'd be there all Summer BUT I'll be renting it out for some of this season. The beach, town and nature are beautiful, balanced by plenty of 'civilization'. You'll see dolphins breach and frolic all day, enjoy the oldest Seaside Resort town on the East Coast with gorgeous Victorians and a family vibe. I've got a couple of weeks still available in August. Hope to hear from you! http://www.simonecolina.com/quad/ [ Reply | More ]

For culture and hiking The Berkshires would be better (Tanglewood and there's a museusm and Williamstown has theater), and I'm not sure of your budget, but I LOVE the Adirondacks. Mirror Lake Inn is nice, but otherwise you can rent a house from someone or go to a great camp - White Pine (haven't been). If you do a camp, it's a little more rustic but you and DH will have your own room (wink wink). [ Reply | More ]

Rent a house in the Finger Lakes. Most have a canoe or rowboat, lots to do in the area with kids, great wine, great cheeses, very very relaxing and gorgeous. Depending which lake you go to, about a 5 hour drive. [ Reply | More ]

I think you will have a hard time finding a beach with a hotel pool near hills/trails for hiking and freshwater for canoeing. That's kind of two different vacations. [ Reply | More ]
