friends were telling me they only want to rent their apartment to married people. i think that is so crazy that they are discriminating against unmarried couples. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It depends. If it's an owner-occupied home, with fewer than 3 rental units it's legal to do it, but it can't be advertised that way. It's called the Boardinghouse exception, and it allows families to determine who they want living in their own homes. I had a landlady who only wanted single women as tennants - she had two apartments in the brownstone where she lived - no single men and no families, esp. with DCs. [ Reply | More

I understand their reasoning - they don't want a revolving door of roomates, and feel that a married couple will take better physical care of the place as they are perceived as more "grown up" - but there are no guarantees. I personally would prefer to rent to a gay couple. Let's be honest, who is going to take better care of the place :) [ Reply | More
