It is a great public school. I would, as most would, rank Hunter first, then Anderson. Hunter has a lot more offerings. Compared to TTs, they're both accelerated, but a bigger class size and no onsite (TTs weed out any kid with issues). I think people tend to send dcs to TT if money is not an issue and commute is not an issue. I think people choose Anderson over non-TT/ [ Reply | More ]

is it better than cgps, cathedral, calhoun, bank street and the like? [ Reply | More ]

Not at all. Privates offer curriculum that publics simply cannot/ Many people would send dc to the schools you mentioned or other 2-tier over Anderson or Hunter. That said, A and H are great school with a great peer group [ Reply | More ]

NP: On what basis do you make the curriculum comparison? Wouldn't all 4 of the private schools have different curricula just among themselves? Why wouldn't you think that A or H have just a good a curriculum? [ Reply | More ]

A's curriculum is decided by the state of NY, it not a great curriculum - but the people who work at A have been able to do very well with a bad curriculum. H has more flexibility - it is not under the thumb of the DOE - which is why many people prefer it. Still, neither are as rich as the curricula of private schools. [ Reply | More ]

In what way are the private schools richer? And which private schools? Like I said above, they don't all have the same curriculum. [ Reply | More ]

More in-depth look at subject matter, more and better integration of art. music, etc. To name just a few. [ Reply | More ]

They do. I am not saying that they don't. However, it is not as strong as most privates. [ Reply | More ]

NP - How can you say that? [ Reply | More ]

I think that Hunter and Anderson probably cover those things very well, esp a "more in-depth look at a subject matter". Do you know anything about either curricula? [ Reply | More ]

Actually the NYS curriculum framework is very good. It's just often not taught very well. It's used by public schools throughout NY State, so if you might tout the best suburban schools as having a good curriculum, it's all based on the exact same framework. It's the teaching that makes all the difference. [ Reply | More ]

I don't agree at all. I have dc in zoned public and the program gets weaker every year. It's all mandated, the teachers are too busy to go into depth. there's no depth. Some of the work is silly. [ Reply | More ]

There are over 200 public schools in the city that, while still following the NY State Curriculum Framework, are exempt from the city's "mandated curriculum" which says how long to spend on each subject. Those schools are exempt because they are high performing. [ Reply | More ]

I read NYS Math curriculum is pretty weak compared to, say, California's. [ Reply | More ]

Have you read the NYS scope and sequence. It's terrific. If schools actually covered all of it, no one would choose privates except the social climbers. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson and Hunter are not accelerated compared to most private schools by 5th grade. [ Reply | More ]

You are incorrect. I have lived a lifetime here and will tell you that Hunter has very bright dcs, gifted in some cases, but the education they are receiving is poor in comparison to their private TT counterparts [ Reply | More ]
