would you consider sending dc to a brand new independent school that would be starting with only one class (K)? the school has a potential to be really wonderful, but i am slightly worried that being so small (15 kids) will be *too* small. thoughts? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Personally for me, 15 kids or 30 kids for several years is a bit too much. [ Reply | More ]

from op: that's part of my worry. the alternative though is public school w/ 25+ in a class in a big city school. [ Reply | More ]

not really bad. btdt. even 25 can seem clostauphobic socially over time. [ Reply | More ]

to those answering "no way", could you elaborate on what your concerns would be? i'm really on the fence, and do see some advantages to such a small setting, and find being one of the founding families to be an exciting opportunity. but i also worry that the setting would be too small. what would the ideal be for you? currently have a dc in a class of 25. can't wait until the year is over and dc can get a new mix of kids. certain cliques have formed and it is a bit tense with the end of the year looming. [ Reply | More ]

I said "no way". My dc is older and I've found that if you have a very very small class/grade like that, it only takes a couple of kids to make it a difficult social situation. Now - it could be a great class of course. But unlike at other schools, with at least 50 in a grade, you can't have a bad year and then the kids get shuffled for the next year. [ Reply | More ]

my dc is in a small school, which we love, get to know everyone, kids get chances to be involved in lots of ways. builds confidence. it isn't for everyone but we like it [ Reply | More ]

If you are really concerned about your child's education, go with the best educational option. Children don't necessarily need a large social group in school just so long as they have a broader social life in the rest of their life. Kids who are homeschooled, for example, are usually found to be the most well-adjusted socially (as well as academically surpassing their peers who attend large schools.) [ Reply | More ]

Chances are this school will keep growing. I have a few friends who really "bought into" the mission of certain new schools (as opposed to being there byu default) and they have enjoyed the process of growing a new school. Make sure you have friends at more established schools with whom you can share ideas....especialy those with older kids....liek a school mentor. [ Reply | More ]

No way. We got claustrophobic over the 2 years at pre-K with only 2 classes of 17. DD and ourselves are ready to be a part of a larger population, to meet more people and different kinds of families. I like big schools, as long as they are well run. That's why I live in NYC--constant stimulation of new ideas, new people. [ Reply | More ]

15 kids sounds great - I wouldn't go to a brand new school because of issues related to management/administration and infrastructure -- how to handle certain issues, etc. A more experienced school administration can make a big difference... [ Reply | More ]
