Tell me if I am crazy. (please don't!) We have found a house we love and can afford, in a Chicago neighborhood that is quite expensive. Thing is: it's a 2 bed, and we have three small children age 5 and under. The trio shares a room now, and I know they don't want to split up, but are we nuts? We have 5 beds now, in a crappy nabe. they are 2 girls and a boy. They are very, very close and I know our 4 year old son's heart would break if we put him in his own room right now. however, I know this can't last forever. I don't know about the sq ft. 2 large bedrooms (22X12) and a nice basement playroom. [ Reply | More ]

They may not mind now, but it may not be possible for them to share for the long haul. I shared with my sister my entire childhood. But I don't think we could have shared with a third. [ Reply | More ]

op: our plan is to build out in about a year and a half, after I'm back at work. It won't be forever. [ Reply | More ]

Have you done this before? Are you certain that you will get the permits, the certificate of occupancy, etc? It isn't always so simple to expand a house. [ Reply | More ]

there is a huge amt of room for expansion. I don't know why we would not get the permits. every house in the neighborhood has an add on [ Reply | More ]

I was in contract to buy a house in Chicago (the city). At the end of the day, there was no CO. Don't assume that just because there are other houses with expansions that you will be able to expand. Hire an architect before you do anything else. [ Reply | More ]

oh, than probably not too bad if they are already sharing and get along fine. Why do they share a room in a 5 bdrm house though? I'm curious [ Reply | More ]

but why did you start them sharing in the first place? I really am not judging, I'm trying to decide if doing this would be best so that they learn to get along at a younger age. [ Reply | More ]

they just don't know anything else, is all. I would never do anything different. I think a little kid alone in a room is so sad. it's such a crazy western thing, this i-need-my-own-room thing. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree. I've never understood why we try so hard to get kids to sleep by themselves. I hate sleeping when dh is away.... [ Reply | More ]
