only respond w/first hand knowledge, not speculation: do fifth grade graduates of schools like PS 199, 87, 6, other solid well reputed public, gen ed programs, get in to tt privates in 6th grade? or is it better to go private even if it is 3rd tier / so called like york etc and apply out in 5th grade to better privates (assuming your dc has the grades/scores). I personally know that many 199 and 87 kids stay public and go to one of the middle schools in district three that they feed into. [ Reply | More ]

many people whoo go public are so pleased with it that they don't switch, especially if they get a good MS. those who are set on going private later, usually do. btw, my parents sent my sibs and I to ps87 way back when I went to brearley, and my 2 brothers went to trinity. I think kids coming from 3rd tier privates are at a disadvantage unlesss they are stars. perhaps you need to be a star coming from public as well these days. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, and PS87 is extremely well connected with the middle schools in district 3. [ Reply | More ]

I've also heard that going to PS87 gives you a bit of a leg up with the good MSs in 3. [ Reply | More ]

I know TTs love Hunter and Anderson kids (I'm sure NEST, too). Or top G&T, but not sure about gen ed. YOu don't have to be smart to be there and curriculum is not accelerated so they might be behind when they join private school. [ Reply | More ]

of course you don't have to be smart to "be there": that's where tests, grades, intvs., etc come into play. My lord! you don't have to be "smart" to be in preschool either, but all these schools take most of their classes in K from preschools across the city!!! [ Reply | More ]
