Is there anyone who has dc in the Lucy Moses School for Suzuki violin? Any comments about that school? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

music teacher here. do not like lucy moses or suzuki. lucy moses is based on russian teaching which i hate. and suzuki, though kids sound good, leaves students with a skill so good (ear training) that they become handicapped in every other area of music (musicality, reading, understanding) [ Reply | More ]

SMS is based on Russian teaching. I don't think Lucy Moses has anything to do with the Special Music School, does it? [ Reply | More ]

some people say not, but how could it not? i went to an audition there of an 8 year old girl, and the adults there (4) ripped this girl apart. it was horrible. music should be enjoyed. [ Reply | More ]

NP: It is two separate entities in one building. One is a private music/dance (only) school - Lucy Moses - and the other is a NYC public school (Special Music School) [ Reply | More ]

A lot of Lucy Moses teachers are also Russian, as is the coordinators. DC does piano there are pretty much all teachers are russian and strict. I don't care for it either. [ Reply | More ]

HATE Lucy Moses. My 7-y.o. daughter was taking a class on the top floor which is only accessible by elevator. Her class was the only one on that floor at that hour in the evening, so it was very isolated. I was a few minutes late picking DC up due to a stalled subway in front of my subway, so teacher left DC alone in the classroom so that she could make her next class downstairs. When I spoke with the teacher AND the director of the school, they both told me my child's safety is not their responsibility if I'm not on time to pick up my child. My daughter was in tears and terrified when I showed up that evening. [ Reply | More ]

As long as nothing happens to your unattended child, I suppose your experience with Lucy Moses would be good. I don't expect them to babysit my child, but I was late for a good reason and their response wasn't even accommodating in the least. It's very easy for anyone off the street to walk into that building filled with young children. [ Reply | More ]

op; it does seem a bit cold to me when I took my son to meet the chair. My dc is currently in Queens College. I really like the environment there. It has an atrium where all the parents and kids hang out while waiting for the next class. It gives me a big family kind of the feeling. After going there for a while, you kind of know everyone there. Considering changing due to scheduling issue. [ Reply | More ]

Try to read more about the Suzuki method to see if this is what you want for your child. We decided against it -- it gives early results (children mimic each other), but not good long-term results. Having said that, our db has taken other classes at LMS and we were happy. [ Reply | More ]

Instead of Suzuki LMS also offers traditional violin classes, I believe. Give them a call. [ Reply | More ]
