In Southern NJ, the parents all tend to hold their children back a year if they have a Summer-Fall b-day. A teacher in my neighborhood said we would notice the difference if we didn't hold our dd back. She is an August baby. It is all a competition now about being the smartest, etc. Arghhh. It ticks me off too. I think the schools should have some guidelines - like a test or something. [ Reply | More ]

I know that - just saying if you show up to register your 6 yo for K, they should make you prove that the kid isn't ready for 1st grade. [ Reply | More ]

I don't so much have an issue with the kids that are within a month or 2 of the cutoff - but the ones who are right in the middle are mostly ridiculous. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. Know someone with a Nov. birthday (cuttoff here is Aug 31) and they are holding the girl back. Hate to think that my DS With an April birthday will be compared to someone in his class who is almost 18 months older than he is. [ Reply | More ]

my sis and sil are both exactly the same age. one was held back and the other pushed forward. not a scientific study, but there was a huge difference. it was much better for my sister. [ Reply | More ]
