anyone else annoyed that some seemingly mediocre kids got into some great g&t programs/schools when yours did not or did not even pass the test? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I still havent gotten over the fact that we couldnt find a single K spot for my terrific kid despite applying broadly and not needing financial aid. The supply demand inequities are maddening.. [ Reply | More ]

yes. so frustrating. some total dumb bells got into great schools while some of the brightest kids did not even pass test. Great system the DOE has created there [ Reply | More ]

*yawn* It does take a little something to "pass" the test. Sorry that yours didn't have it. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe the DOE should consult you on who's a dumb bell and who isn't. I'm sure that would be a much better system. [ Reply | More ]

What do you mean by pass? Your child got lower than 90? In what way are these children "seemingly mediocre?" [ Reply | More ]

Apparently, DOE has it all wrong. Instead of buying OLSAT from Hartcourt, they should have hired OP and be done with it. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but having gone through the system, I also realize the G&T really isn't any better than a good zoned school. Just better bragging rights. [ Reply | More ]

disagree completely -- in my experience, G&Ts, on average, are better academically than gen eds. [ Reply | More ]

gen eds have to teach to the slowest student...g&t's can keep a good pace. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I obviously can't vouch for your experience. But in my own experience through 5 yrs of a very coveted G&T which is housed with a very good gen ed, have found it to be a hit-or-miss experience. Most of it has to do with how lucky you were with the teachers, which tended to be better in the gen ed classes w/ less turnover. [ Reply | More ]

yup. It's got nothing to do with your child at all, right? Any good teacher would just answer all the questions instead of the child and every child would have gotten a 99. [ Reply | More ]

It's pretty arrogant for you to label children as seemingly mediocre when you don't have any professional basis to determine a child's academic potential. I usually have found, professionally (I'm a teacher) that some of the most gifted students don't show it to adults outside school - almost as though they know they are different and are uncomfortable that it might make them unacceptable. If you have a very bright kid, at that age it's a bit of a crapshoot whether or not your dc will happen to test well on that particular day (assuming that you have not been tutoring dc on test-taking skills). Not doing well on the test does not necessarily mean your dc is less bright that most of the kids there- just means dc was not particularly lucky that day. [ Reply | More ]

not true. there are some kids who are very consistent. couldn't perform porrly if they tried. [ Reply | More ]
