Do you think more families will apply to privates bec of DOE mess this year? Even the families who never thought of applying to privates might bec now they know 1) 200-300 kids getting 99 and taking all non-sib spots at A/NEST/and other top G&Ts? I heard Dalton got 1000 kids apply last fall. The year before that, 700 kids applied to D. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What mess? The pre-K admission was a mess, yes. The G&T admission was very straight forward. What was messy about it? Every kid that scored 90 and above was able to get a seat in a G&T program. [ Reply | More ]

PREk was a mess. But even for Kindergarten, they had to lower the bar to 90 (which screws non sibs) and they kept missing the deadlines. A popular G&T like PS9 decided to offer only 1 class (after lowering the bar to 90, it was a blow to UWS non sibs who got over 95). A copy of BSRA was available online which many families got a hold of which many families took advantage of (cheating). [ Reply | More ]

Wow, your threshold for something to become a mess is rather low. Considering the amount of children that went through this I thought it turned out to be rather smooth. Setting cut-off scores is an arbitrary thing. 95 or 90, it doesn't matter. [ Reply | More ]

Whatever. If you didn't know to be home to get a G&T letter hand delivered and was out on vacation, you would have missed the deadline to notify acceptance. Anyway, you just have a bone to pick with me. [ Reply | More ]

no. I just don't understand how it was a mess. Again, the preK admission was a mess. But G&T? It was smooth and straight forward. The DOE even followed up with folks who did not reply on time etc. etc. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I think it's that not even all 99ers got their top 3 choices. If you have 95/96, you might get a G&T that is on the bottom of your list and many families might apply to privates in case. [ Reply | More ]

okay, but that is not the DOE's fault. It was just a highly competitive year. The seats were assigned fair and square. [ Reply | More ]

DOE first said G&T curriculum will be accelerated (even district ones), but the school principals said no. They all say there is no diff bet G&T and gen ed. Then, what's the point? Anyway, DOE is not sending a strong signal to principals and now that cutoff is lowered, they won't accelerate for sure. Acceleration, imo, is the only justification for G&T and it was a major consideration for me. I would not have applied to G&T had I known it wasn't going to be accelerated like DOE said they would. They published a paper on this topic. [ Reply | More ]

I read it on DOE website before but I'm sure they must have taken it down now that they lowered cutoff to 90 and they can't keep the paper that says why kids over 95% NEED a specialized, accelerated curriculum bec of the research that supports this, etc. I can't imagine they'd still have it. It was a powerpoint document. [ Reply | More ]

np; You may want to move to another country where every school, G&T or not, is much more accelerated in math and science than it is here in the USA. LOL [ Reply | More ]

I don't know why we don't value math and science. Give it 50 yrs and our country will be seriously in trouble. [ Reply | More ]

We rely on our immigrants from Asia and Eastern Europe to provide the kids who excel in math and science. Look at Stuy and Hunter. [ Reply | More ]

the magic word is immigrants... look at the 2nd and 3rd gen of them. they seem to lose the touch of it. could that be the us school system lacks of proper challenge? [ Reply | More ]

Nope, it's the easier life that makes you lose the drive. The next generation is better off and therefore does not have to work as hard. Which is good and bad, for different reasons. [ Reply | More ]

I think math and reading is way overvalued in our school system. It needs to be balanced with social sciences, music, art, physical sciences, etc. etc. [ Reply | More ]

The point is that the peer group is academically strong. While the curriculum may not be accelerated it could go deeper. Don't you think it makes a difference for your child to sit in a class room where everybody is more or less on the same intellectual level? No need to teach to the weakest. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, the evenness of group's intellectual level is why I send my dc to the G&T program. In that environment children will be adequately challenged, the teacher is just the guiding light. If the group can absorb more, I am sure the teacher will provide it appropriately. [ Reply | More ]

Other than Hunter and Anderson, I've never heard of acceleration at a public elementary school. [ Reply | More ]

I'm getting turned off by the DOE. I'm zoned for a good public but who know what the DOE might do to mess it up. I'm likely to apply to privates for my dc next year. [ Reply | More ]

I think it will work both ways. Many people who prefer public will apply to privates because of the DOE mess, and many people who prefer private will also apply to hunter and G&Ts because of the large number of shutouts in the private system. [ Reply | More ]

Nope. Everyone who can even remotely apply is already doing so. It's not like there were less spots this year than last, it's been very competitive for a while. And there are no more spots in privates either. [ Reply | More ]
