ds is extremely brainy and sweet but not outgoing or athletic - he is also on the small side. PSD was pretty negative re: tt, although she said he is "brilliant". If you have DS like this, where is he going for kindergarten? Obviously someplace like Buckley not a fit, but does he have a shot at a Dalton, assuming scores are great? Any insight would be helpful as I want to have realistic expectations, but also don't want to aim too low. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

There will be plenty of schools that are appropriate. As far as Dalton goes, is he a leader or a follower. They definitely want "take charge" kids. [ Reply | More ]

Hmmm. He is a leader with kids he knows, but I am not sure if he'll jump into a group he doesn't know on a playdate. Any others I should make sure are on our list? [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, I can't stand the NY elite snobbery about private schools. They are ALL good and will give your child an excellent education. When we went through the process I really loved the Town School, Columbia Grammar, Cathedral, Browning, Metropolitan Montessori. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like my DS -- he just finished K at Fieldston and was very, very happy (and so were we!). FWIW, he was also accepted at Allen-Stevenson. Fieldston was our FC, but PSD (who is connected and "brokers") felt as though DS would have had a good shot at the boys' schools and at Riverdale with a FC letter (we "gambled" and didn't write one). My dc is not extremely outgoing or athletic at all (but dc is a girl). Was acting kinda shy at playdate but got into D. Will send dd to D in the fall. D's playdate is small - only 4 kids per group, so it does not hurt kids who are not Alpha male/female type unlike some SS school playdates where they had huge groups. Also, D is more individual focused and not looking for a social butterfly AS LONG AS dc can (imo) relate well to teachers and other kids but one doesn't have to be a leader, imo. [ Reply | More ]

Dalton likes very smart kids. I guess as long as dc is not completely anti-social and PSD writes dc has issues, I'd think you have a shot at D. Does your PSD broker?? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, and I think she would give very strong report for him. [ Reply | More ]

Don't worry, then. My normally social dc acted like a hermit at playdates. Didn't want to separate and was clingy. Got into 2 TTs. [ Reply | More ]

FWIW, I have a DS like that who is thriving at LL, and other even smaller and/or non-athletic boys are doing particularly well there. Maybe this is a weird comment, but I think that G&T publics are really good for smaller non-athletic boys, they really seem able to shine there. [ Reply | More ]

Lower Lab, PS 77 which you can only apply to if you live in District 2, which spans the UES, Grammercy and across town to parts of Chelsea. [ Reply | More ]

ds like that in our preschool class is going to St. Bernards. You should look there and at Collegiate, too. Not sure where you live, but St. Anns might be worth a look, too. [ Reply | More ]

I would apply to all the boy schools, CGPS, Riverdale, HM. The problem with Dalton and other progressives is they want outgoing, self-starters. If they don't see that exhibited in play date it is going to be a problem. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know about that. My Dalton kid was not outgoing at playdate. Was just "normal" socially. Not especially outgoing. There are shy kids at D, too. [ Reply | More ]
