the ironly is that LL started as a highly left wing, highly progressive and very diverse school that staked some ground in a wasteland. It has become wealthier and whiter as the e90s have gentrified and as g&ts got more desirable. If the magic real estate fairy airlifted either 77 or 198 and gave them their own space then no problem, right? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

So the only point about LL is that the kids of each race see each other every day? [ Reply | More ]

If LL and 198 were in their own buildings, and no one perceived any problem with them, what is the problem with them sharing one building? [ Reply | More ]

the 2 schools are completely seperate. they just happen to share one large building. 2 principals, 2 totally different set of teachers, 2 pta's. the kids probably dont even know there are 2 schools. [ Reply | More ]

sounds like another idiot! I mean what do people think should be done about this situation. perhaps we should keep all the G&T programs in one building, segregated from everyone else so that you don't see the racial disparity. not our faults if the non-white kids do not test into LL [ Reply | More ]

the point is the overall inequity in the system overall - focus on this one situation at LL/198 is misguided [ Reply | More ]

yes, I agree. same with all the schools that house a G&T. It seems silly to keep harping on the fact that the non-white kids make up a larger proportion of the gen ed. [ Reply | More ]

But in most situations, both G&T and gen ed are part of the same school so all resources are shared, kids have the same specials, use all the same facilities etc. This is not the case with LL/198. [ Reply | More ]

Even if the schools had their own buildings, it wouldn't solve the problem. My son at 77 has pals at 198. [ Reply | More ]

of course we live in nyc. what about after school activities - our kids meet kids from lots of different schools [ Reply | More ]

I think it's better for all kids if there is one school in a building. It doesn't solve the bigger problems of society, but it also does not give children a daily reminder of the inequities, or, even worse, make them think the inequities are somehow the natural order of things. [ Reply | More ]

What inequities do the kids see every day at 77 or 198? [ Reply | More ]

They see kids of different colors separated. They get the message that the white kids are the smart ones. [ Reply | More ]

The little ones at LL get it from their parents. The 4th and 5th graders in both schools can figure it out on their own. [ Reply | More ]

Wouldn't that be the parents' fault then? And wouldn't they impart that message no matter where the kids went? [ Reply | More ]

Except for the fact that many LL kids have friendships with 198 kids and vice versa. So, there is no message. [ Reply | More ]

So let me get this straight. TAG and the Chinatown G&Ts are "not good" because, despite great test scores, there aren't enough white kids there. Lower Lab & PS 166 G&T are problematical because of the "apartheid" there - white kids in the G&T, minority kids in the gen ed. BUT PS 9 and PS 116 are great schools because both the G&T and gen ed are mostly white. Is that it? [ Reply | More ]

PS 116 is far from being mostly white..... [ Reply | More ]

Apartheid is a the problem - it's a bad, bad message to send to kids that racial differences are a basis to classify and divide people - there's no way those kids aren't getting that message no matter what their parents tell them. A huge negative imo and a reason we chose not to send our kids to a school like that. [ Reply | More ]

NP - think the diversity will hold with the new lottery system? [ Reply | More ]

really hope so - I know that was the point of the lottery to begin with but MSC had always actively sought a diverse mix and was worried lottery might mess that up - the past couple of years they have been recruiting in less well off neighborhoods, Head Starts, etc. to make sure they don't lose the diversity. I think MSC does a great job. I hope the lottery won't mess that up. Still, the largest racial group is white in the elementary school, but it changes in the middle school, doesn't it? A lot of the white kids leave after 5th, I thought. [ Reply | More ]

I guess that is true (but it is still less than half white). There are a bunch of kids that leave after 5th, maybe more white kids than non-white but not all. And there are some incoming white kids that come in for 6th. So the mix shifts in middle school but not drastically. [ Reply | More ]
