Parents who are already enrolled in g&t programs--did they start pushing reading in K or 1st grade? My older child is at Hunter and they really did not push reading until 1st, but I think I remember hearing from friends in DOE G&T programs that reading was emphasized starting in K. If so, how quickly do they go? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

district G&T. dc came in n0t reading and by november was reading fluently. now reads and comprehends chapter books he reads to himself. can read just about anything. believe he came to be developmentally ready, but at the same time, once he is ready for something, he tends to advance rapidly. btw, we have always followed his lead. if he shows no interest, we figure he is not ready. its been our experience that once he is ready he throws himself into it and can do nothing else for awhile [ Reply | More ]

op: that is what happened to my daughter in the summer between K and 1. She went from barely reading "Bears on Wheels" to reading 4th grade chapter books [ Reply | More ]
