Lawyer types: Is there some City oversight board or office like the GAO that can ask the DOE for a post-mortem on what went wrong this year? They screwed up so much, and then screwed it up again and it's the last week of school and some of us still don't know where our kids got in. I'm just wondering who to write to--are they accountable to anyone? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP: WTF? I'm not saying I'm going over there and kicking their asses. I'm just wondering who has oversight. I've lived here my whole life. Speaking up often works and at the very least it makes me feel better. [ Reply | More ]

I think your best bet is Besty Gotbaum's office. Do you know anyone there? [ Reply | More ]

GL. If things hadn't worked out for us due to snafus, you bet your butt that I'd be raising a ruckus. I really don't care what anon. UBers would think of me, either. And fwiw, B.G's office has been great with three issues I know of - 2 for programs I am involved with and one regarding a personal issue for a friend. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's a fair point. I got the wrong family's letter this year (ie: the envelopes were stuffed incorrectly). When I called the DOE, they actually suggested that I forward on the letter and wait for someone else to forward me my letter. [ Reply | More ]

The Mayor. The Chancellor / DOE is directly under the Mayor's watch. You can write to him, tell your friends, and to hell w/this Mayor Bloom berg is great stuff. He sucks. S U C K S. Oh, 311 was good but that's it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: No, shockingly, they haven't sent letters to D1 for the lottery yet. Or we haven't gotten them, anyway. The G&T letters came by courier over the weekend but we're left with calling the schools, who aren't really allowed to say anything, if they know. It's a nightmare. No one can plan and schools can't do orientation. [ Reply | More ]

not sure what you mean? G&T schools won't register you? won't acknowledge to you that you are on the list over the phone? do they tell you to come by in person? also, if this is more for the lottery, why not get a petition for all the D1 parents to sign and take that to bloomberg? [ Reply | More ]

OP: No, not G&T. Regular classes and progressives. The schools can't tell us and say wait for the letter and no letter is forthcoming. We should storm Bloomberg's office, although we keep thinking bythe time we get that done we'll have been notified. [ Reply | More ]

Accountable to the Mayor. But if you are looking for someone to scrutinize what was done, I suggest you speak with the boro president (Scott Stringer, Manhattan) or public advocate (Betsy Gotbaum) [ Reply | More ]

call to check with the policy (issues) director in the office. If they don't know about this already, they should. And if anyone can get answers it should be there. [ Reply | More ]

The Panel for Educational Policy oversees G&T admissions policy. The current policy was approved 12-1 with Manhattan Borough President Stringer's appointee opposed. You can and should complain to your BP, City Council member and State Assembly member. The City Comptroller William Thompson has the power to audit the process as well. And Betsy Gotbaum has been very focused on education. But the mayor has extraordinary authority under the current system. The State Legislature will decide what changes in the governance structure of the schools to make next year so letting them know is probably the most useful. [ Reply | More ]
