I am so broke I want to cry. Dh and I never have ANY money though we make about $130K combined. I mean NO MONEY. I went to the eye doctor today and couldn't pay the co-pay. $15 and I couldn't pay it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have. I pay most of my paycheck to daycare and older dd's private school (we have MAJOR financial aid but it is still $750/month). It leaves me about $300/month for groceries and a few $$ a day spending money. [ Reply | More ]

You cant afford private school, that I can see. You are paying almost $20k. a year in tuition. [ Reply | More ]

I know. But school is just not something I want to cheap out on. Dd was so unhappy in our local public. We just switched her to private. It is really really hard to pay for it, that I admit. [ Reply | More ]

But you couldn't pay YOUR DOCTOR. Doesn't that strike you as a higher priority than your dd's tuition, when public school is available for free? [ Reply | More ]

Where do you live? we;re in nyc and that's about our income. While we're often stretched, it's not that bad. Hmmm. Tried a budget? Where's the money going? [ Reply | More ]

we live on the LES. Decent rent. We owe a shitload, and are in debt consolidation. I guess we DO NOT know how to budget. [ Reply | More ]

I think there are good free services that help with learning how to budget. Maybe motleyfool.com can help you figure out someone to ask. Or the debt consolidation people? Sounds like most of your $$ goes to child care. I'm the poster w/similar income (and similar neighborhood!). Actually 130K was before dc was born; now it's all dh's 90K income and we're doing it with me sahming + maybe 10K freelance income. So it IS doable for you, I suspect. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

well it sounds like something has to give. I would say the private tuition would free up a lot of money have you considered trying for a G&T or one of the east village lottery schools? [ Reply | More ]

she was in an EV lottery school. Very unhappy. We applied to private, got in and got FA. Maybe it was a big mistake. [ Reply | More ]

i think it's dangerous to send your child to a school that is "rarified" and doesn't necessarily reflect their day to day reality. You could, potentially, be setting them up for a big fall-out. I am a child of such an existence and it literally rocked my world. Be wise. [ Reply | More ]
