Would you rather live in Riverdale and send dc to Anderson or move to a beautiful burb with great schools and an easy commute into NYC? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no commute is easy compared to a simple cross town bus ride. I would not leave the city unless I was prepared to leave my job. [ Reply | More ]

Riverdale is not a simple crosstown bus ride. It's Riverdale, not the UES. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. We live in Riverdale. I love the commute for us but it totally depends where you are going and where you choose to live here. BTW people live in modest houses here also. Not all houses are in the millions so if you want that it is possible. [ Reply | More ]

In my particular financial situation, I would rather live up by Columbia with no car and do Anderson, then move to the suburb (I'd find a job outside the city though), lastly Riverdale. I feel like a house in a beautiful burb with great schools and an easy commute would cost so much that I could have a 2BR rental a close ride from Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't move to the burbs for any reason. Yuk. Plus, you'd actually be driving (or putting your child on the bus) for a longer commute, most likely in the burbs. And the mentality out there is not for me (homophobic, only the occasional black or latina wife, but plenty of Asian trophy wives.) [ Reply | More ]

we live in pelham. there are no buses, we are a block form school so we walk rain or shine. very close to city, so we go often, but it is def. the burbs and you have to be on board with that. we are very happy with the elementary schools. [ Reply | More ]

I live in the city, but have you ever been to a suburb or did you just watch some movie about a CT town? For instance, South Orange/Maplewood has some same-sex parent households and black husbands AND wives; the Princeton area has tons of Asian Indian families; Other towns have a lot of Asian families (Scarsdale); Mamaroneck has Hispanic families. Anyway, it's not like Anderson is a thriving example of diversity, it's all *smart* kids. (And great for OP that her child got in, I would send my child in a heartbeat). [ Reply | More ]

Everyone I know in the better Westchester burbs (except for Hastings which is more hippy dippy) is now sending their kids to private schools for middle school and high school because the say the education stinks in public and worse, the general attitude of the kids is "party on, dude" rather than being with motivated students like you'll find at the good NYC public middle schools and selective high schools. Several have moved back because there are so few private options even with a long commute in Westchester. [ Reply | More ]

^^ They've had the same problems we face in NYC - unwillingness or budget constraints to include foreign language in elementary so it's run by the PTA as an a.m. or p.m. program, even more ridiculous school board politics, paying for most enrichments, PLUS you pay huge school taxes and a lack of high quality teachers that the schools can retain, regardless of the higher salaries they pay. Mamaroneck has a significant number of mixed race families as well, mostly white/latino and white/black. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, pullease! I am black and live in Westchester and I have met and befriended several high achieving black women and their families. I actually find the city to be far more homogenous than the burbs. Having lived on the UWS, I found that the only people of color I encountered with the exception of a college friend worked on the UWS (often as nannies) and then retreated to the outer boroughs come night. The diversity of the City is the biggest myth! [ Reply | More ]

I can't agree more, I also used to live in the UWS. we are a mixed race black/white family and find lower Westchester to have more black and more black/white families than the desirable parts of the city did (not sure about upper westchester. [ Reply | More ]

That would depend upon where you live. We live in Maplewood, our kids walk (!) to school, we have plenty of gay families, we are a diverse community racially as well. Tons of music, art here, too, BTW, and it takes about 30 minutes to get to Manhattan on the train. Do you have any other objections? I'm curious. [ Reply | More ]

ita, depending on what part of town you live in, you can walk to schools and everything else in places like Larchmont and Mamaroneck. There are tons of of music and art here even for kids, the Mamaroneck School district has one of the best performing arts programs in the country. Mamaroneck is racially diverse with hispanic AND black families. Also have a short commute 35 mins to Grand Central. [ Reply | More ]

We have your choice and are moving to burbs. Once you are in Riverdale, what's the difference being in Bronxville or Larchmont or Scardsdale? Yes, you are further out of the city and the commute is a little longer, but I am a firm believer that once you are out of Manhattan, you are out of Manhattan. I know I am going to offend people in Brooklyn and Queens, but so be it. [ Reply | More ]

I'd read that Scarsdale and Ossining had some of the highest suicide rates in the country for teens. There's a price to pay for the pressure of keeping up a town's level of achievement for their reputation. You think Anderson parents are competitive. Wait until you move to Scarsdale! At least we're not comparing bank statements here, too, in NYC publics. I've LIVED in the burbs...never going back. [ Reply | More ]

I'm the poster that lives in Riverdale and I totally disagree. It's still the city here. I've lived in Westchester and it's a completely different vibe with the people and lifestyle. I'm not trying to encourage people to come here though. Our schools are becoming overcrowded like any other good neighborhood in the city because all the young families are flocking here. Do your kids go to Anderson now? People usually move to Riverdale for the schools. We just did and actually the commute by Mass transit to Anderson I think would be tough. You would have to probably take the express bus and then either walk or take another bus to school. [ Reply | More ]

Or you could put your child on the private bus that runs from Riverdale for less than $4000 a year - far less than your suburban school taxes will run you. [ Reply | More ]

np: some parents at citywide schools get together and hire a private bus to take their kids to school if they don't qualify for the city bus (because they're more than 5 miles away or in another boro). [ Reply | More ]
