i would go with ps166 personally. I like the idea of a very bright peer group. also ps87 is a huge program, whereas you will only be 50 kids for the next 6 years at ps166 [ Reply | More ]

I have two friends who left PS87 for privates recently. They told me it's pretty common there. [ Reply | More ]

We are going with 166. We chose it for: 1) concerns that with mixed ability class and inclusion classes at 87 that our child might be bored and therefore disruptive, 2) smaller school (7 Ks at 87), after school program with more sports offerings (we have a boy) , 3) peer group 4) people we know at 166 love it (most love 87 but we have had friends with a very smart child who were dissatisfied) 5) If we decide to apply out to private in a couple of years we have been told that privates look more favorably on gifted programs. We know we are giving up a stronger principal at 87 and a more unified community, but want to try 166. Because we are zoned for 87 we feel it will always be there for us if we don't like 166. Do you worry about child starting at 87 in say 2nd or 3rd grade - if all the other kids already know each other? That is one of my concerns [ Reply | More ]

Not when there are 7 different kindergartens. By 2nd or 3rd grade they will only have spent time with maybe one third of them. I think kids are adaptable at that age. We moved when I was in 3 grade and I had no trouble adjusting to the new school--in fact I liked it much better than the one I left. [ Reply | More ]

Also, did you tour both? I think 166 also has more space in the school and nicer facilities for specials. Both schools raise nice money. 166 has assistant teachers for a longer period of time--full time for the first two years, and part time after that through 5th [ Reply | More ]

PS 166 has a wonderful building and less over-crowding than 87. I think 87 is too big. I wasn't thrilled with 166's principal, but the PA is great. GL [ Reply | More ]

I love 87, but 166 g&t is good too. I think it depends on which is a better fit for your dc and your family situation. [ Reply | More ]
