My DC learned to socialize at his zoned public...as far as Math, History and Science are conerned I'd say that he learned 90% at home. Thanks Bloomberg for helping my DC learn how to socialize, I'm not giving you any credit for his scores though [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I know a family switching their child from ps 9 G&T to private. They said it was good until 3rd grade and then it was just dumb, rote, boring work and their son stopped learning anything. They had a younger child in private already and they saw the difference immediately. [ Reply | More ]

ITA with that. Public schools truly suck in grades 3-5 [ Reply | More ]

that's because they're teaching to the test during those years [ Reply | More ]

Actually, around 3rd to 4th grade is when cognitive development really takes off. So, the under-demanding curriculum and necessary focus on classroom management become problems at that point. [ Reply | More ]

It's not that, it's the endless test prep that replaces real learning at that point. [ Reply | More ]

But the "4th grade problem" has been around forever. In my neighborhood, people habitually sent their children to the "pretty good" local school but pulled them out in 4th grade to go to a private. [ Reply | More ]

It has gotten worse. [ Reply | More ]

it's worse because thereare NO spots for third and fourth grade in most privates. Historically people moved to the burbs when their oldest kid hit third grade. ..creating attrition and openings in private schools, allowing for 'movement' from public to private for other kids. Nobody's going anywhere. [ Reply | More ]

This may change, actually. But I meant more that testing is getting more and more focus with the school grading and other crap. [ Reply | More ]

isn't 199 the only coveted zoned school in the UWS? Or is 87 also coveted? [ Reply | More ]

Both are quite coveted, by far the best gen ed schools on UWS. [ Reply | More ]

87 is edging out 199 in coveted-ness this year because of 199s crowding. 87 has as many kids, but more room to handle them. [ Reply | More ]

199 still has quite a bit better scores and MS admissions which people care about as much as they complain about the testing. [ Reply | More ]

No, scores are equal now with the new principal at 87. Don't know about MS admissions. 199 has gotten a negative-ish reputation in the past year or two. Less people looking for lottery spots, and more zoned people looking elsewhere. Not keeping up with the bigger population, some administration issues too. [ Reply | More ]

Well my ds got into every top tier private school that we applied to from p.s. 116. Oh and he was in gen ed, not tag. He is now at the top tier private school and is completly bored with the curriculum. He thought 116 was more challenging. But thanks for your comments. [ Reply | More ]
