I've heard urine is sterile, but is that true? Potty training Newbie here. DS inevitably grabs onto the nasty toilet seat in public restrooms. I try to clean the seat beforehand etc, but I'm wondering if urine is "sterile" or if he could get ill from touching urine from an ill person. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Think about it for just a minute. As long as urine is inside the body, it's sterile, but as soon as it leaves the body it is a breeding ground for bacteria. Wash his hands with soap and water every time. [ Reply | More ]

so the statement "urine is sterile" is false. Urine might be/can be sterile. But even as it leaves your ureter, it might not be sterile. [ Reply | More ]

statement should have included "in a healthy person", all bets are off when a person is ill. [ Reply | More ]

urine is only sterile when it comes out, that doesn't mean that all sorts of nasty bacteria accumulate on toilet seats. There's a good reason why you wash your hands after going to the bathroom each time. Just was his hands before he has a chance to stick them in his mouth. [ Reply | More ]
