we are moving overseas and need to let our nanny go. she has been with us about 9 months and working part-time (30-35 hrs/wk). She's been fine but definitely not fabulous. She is paid hourly ($14 for looking after 1 kid, $16 for 2, $10 when we're sharing with other family). If we give her 4 weeks notice should we also be providing some kind of severance pay? I'd expect her to work the notice period as we still need her. Don't want her to leave disgruntled (or leave early) but money is tight and we would try to help her find another position. I was thinking maybe 1 week severance pay (30 hrs). She got a nice Christmas bonus from us as well as some paid vacation (more than I got from my own job...). What is usual in these situations? i wouldn't give her 4 weeks notice. what if she finds a new job right away and needs to leave -- then you're left high and dry. also, a week's severance is all right -- no need for two weeks when she has been working less than a year and got a nice bonus. [ Reply | More ]
