So the reality this year is that 97's, 98's and some 99's are going to District G&T, which can potentially include 90-97's. How does/can a citywide G&T get started in Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Right. It's so terrible that a 99 might have to slum it with a 95. [ Reply | More ]

op: I would not put it so harshly. More like , why can't there me choices for the people who live out of Manhattan? My District program only does enrichment, what if I would have liked Enrichment and acceleration like NEST and Anderson offers? [ Reply | More ]

It bothers me that you think a kid with a 97 is so unbelievably different from a child with a 94, or even an 89. All children are gifted in their own way. ANd if your kid needs acceleration then stop complaining and get on it yourself! [ Reply | More ]

I don't think they are different, NEST and ANDERSON and TAG do. [ Reply | More ]

my dd got a 94 and her friend got a 97 but my dd got more correct on the exam than her friend- birthdays played a big part in the percentiles [ Reply | More ]

That is true. Also, the tester was a bigger factor in this test because there was a wider variety of good/bad tester. [ Reply | More ]

From one of the districts outside the city that had over 50 kids above the 97th percentile. Besides D1&2, there was D20 with 57 qualifiers,D21 with 61 qualifiers and D22 with 84 qualifiers. That 202 total kids In lower Brooklyn, where they could be eligible for Buses. That is at 8 classes just for K. I think it is well justified. [ Reply | More ]

You get no argument from me. Do you have G&T starting in K or 1? Can parents band together and put in a request? A citywide model (accelerated, not just enriched) seems justified in your case. [ Reply | More ]

Don't forget D15. We have a lot of qualifiers too. I think that this is an INCREDIBLE idea. There is a ton of new construction in Downtown Brooklyn with easily accessible subway and bus lines. Perhaps DOE could build a new Citywide in Brooklyn? [ Reply | More ]

There are already 100 K kids qualifying for citywides in 4 adjoining districts in Queens (24,25,26,28) alone. That's an entire NEST intake right there. [ Reply | More ]

So your child didn't get into Anderson or Nest as was the case for many, many other children. What does that have to do with a citywide not in Manhattan (not that I don't agree there should be). [ Reply | More ]

NP: Friend got accepted to a citywide and lives in Queens. They have 2 more days to decide between long commutes for their 5yo, or giving that up for a possible spot in a possibly good distrct G&T after spending a year in their zoned school. [ Reply | More ]

I live in lower brooklyn. I liked Anderson and would have even considered TAG if it did not include 2 hours of travel for my 5 year old. Let the 99's in the City get Anderson and NEST, just give us a choice that is less than a hour of travel. [ Reply | More ]

How can it get started? I think parents in the outer boroughs need to make a lot of noise about the inequality, not just that the citywides are inaccesible for most of them, but that in most districts, G&T doesn [ Reply | More ]

...doesn't even begin until 1st grade (who wants to uproot their child if they can avoid it?). Also, hopefully more outer borough kids will test next year, and test well -- well enough so that they can see the need is there. [ Reply | More ]
