and what should she do with the kids during that hour? leave them home alone? what a ridiculous statement. She should do her errands after work or on the weekends, like the rest of us who work. I certainly don't leave my office for an hour in the middle of the day! [ Reply | More ]

a lot of people do leave work at lunch to get errands done. assuming it's something like a trip to the bank or pharmacy (not shopping for a day) I would have no problem with it . [ Reply | More ]

np: It's a matter of degree. One half hour errand is one thing, but some nannies seem to always run errands, which is not ok with toddlers IMO. I am talking about browsing the Gap etc. [ Reply | More ]

would you rather she call in saying that she can't come in? What type of errands are you talking? [ Reply | More ]

np: ITA, and in any case they don't spend the whole morning in the stores chatting with other nannies while kids are strapped in the stroller. [ Reply | More ]

Oh please, that's all the nannies do on the UES. Shop with their charges. [ Reply | More ]

I encourage my nanny to take the kids on errands. If she need to run to the drug store or bank, why not take the kids? It's the real world. You can't just go to music class and gymboree. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Better that my kids are out and about for an hour than inside watching a video for the upteenth time. Soaking in the sights and sounds of the streets is great. [ Reply | More ]

Of course but they can do that going to the playground or the library too. I don't mind my nanny taking kids shopping but since we no longer use strollers it's always a quick thing. Just the same as when I do it. [ Reply | More ]

I am a nanny in nyc and I do agree with you that there are many nannies running around clothing stores with tired/cranky children. It makes me angry, but I do hope that you realize not all nannies lack a good work ethic. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a SAHM, and I take my children with me on errands. Gonna report me to child welfare? Shopping all day while ignoring a bored toddler trapped in a stroller is wrong, but a few errands won't kill anybody. And it will teach your children they are not always the center of the universe. Try asking your nanny what her plans for the day are and then at the end of the day how those plans went. [ Reply | More ]

Errands are one thing, going to the bank or drugstore is no big deal. Daily browsing of clothing stores is not so great though. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, Nannies are paid to care for your DC, not to browse stores while your DC are strapped to their strollers!!!! [ Reply | More ]
