I think so. Some of the G&Ts are probably as good in terms of academics, but the K-12 aspect and lack of DOE interference make Hunter better than any of them. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't be able to compare but we love Hunter - but there are a lot of Hunter/G&T families at Hunter [ Reply | More ]

And? You're a fool if you think that signifies anything about the intelligence of those dc vs. the dc who did qualify on the OLSAT. [ Reply | More ]

i never mentioned intelligence in my sentence, did i? it just shows that the tests are different, the kids are different, and it all depends on the program. i doubt hunter is much better than A or N or ps9. and you are so fast calling names, yikes :-( [ Reply | More ]

Where does Hunter get its money? How can they provide such a good education without charging tuition and also not be under the jurisdiction of the DOE? [ Reply | More ]

Right - through the Regents, which funds the whole CUNY system. Plus they get state funds, like the DOE schools. [ Reply | More ]

They also get only about half of what DOE allocates for students. BUT, they have massive fundraising - over $1 million a year by parents. They also have teachers that are hired in a University system (read: better benefits and tenure) than DOE can offer. Much easier employer, Hunter College, than DOE with revolving door of power/mayoral interference. [ Reply | More ]

Although CUNY has its own set of bureaucracies, of course. It's been somewhat easier I hear since Jennifer Raab became President of Hunter College. She's a graduate of Hunter HS herself (+ Cornell BA, Princeton MPA, Harvard JD - she likes school!). [ Reply | More ]

I thought Hunter receives around 12K per student--around $1500 less per child than regular NYC public schools get. [ Reply | More ]

It was around 13K per child in 2004 per this: http://www.nysun.com/new-york/new-york-outpacing-other-states-in-school/30299/ [ Reply | More ]

$12,644 it says for NYC. But I saw DOE figures which shows that that also includes the over $30K per pupil spent for Special Ed kids and that gen ed kids alone had an average of $10K per pupil [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, that makes sense. Schools in the expensive suburbs spend over twice that amount per child. [ Reply | More ]

I find these statements hard to believe: Hunter parents raise over 1 million annually for the school? and Hunter receives around 50% of DOE allocation per child? [ Reply | More ]

I also don't think that's true re 50% of DOE amount, but Hunter does get less than DOE pupils. As for the $1 million, I don't know the exact amount either, but remember that it's a K-12, with 2 separate PTAs. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter parent: elementary school raises close to half a million so the over 1 million for the whole school number looks about right when you add in the high school. [ Reply | More ]
