Hijack off the LATE post. My dh has a friend who is ALWAYS late and doesn't care. We were at a dinner party one summer and the host was waiting for him and his family to arrive. The host purposely told him an earlier time since they are always late. The guest were there, STARVING, the host insisted on waiting since they are best friends..well he showed up 5 hrs late..I mean 5 hrs after all of the guest were told to show up..that is 8hrs after he was asked to show up. He laughed, no apologies and said oh well you know how I am. Moving foward a yr, I had a dinner party and we ate when dinner was ready. He was pissed at me because I didn't wait for him to arrive. I told him, he knew the time and knew I wasn't going to be rude to my other guest who arrived on time. UGH hate ppl like that [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

op: for our dinner party I said dinner will be at 8pm..ppl were arriving for cocktails at 7pm. He arrives at 10:30pm to my home. Too bad. The other summer party was more of a early dinner party. She told him to be there at 12pm with the hope he would be there at 3pm (the time she asked us to be there) but he got there at 8pm [ Reply | More ]

Well, that's appropriate- people can just continue on with the dinner or whatever and let him show up when he shows up. Of course he's rude, but so what? [ Reply | More ]

op: my point is that he gets annoyed at you if you don't wait or kiss his ass. God forbid if you tell him he's wrong he gets pissy [ Reply | More ]

But why do you have to "tell him he's wrong" when he's a guest in your home? Why can't you just say, oh well, looks like Jack is running late and serve the dinner as planned? Sounds like you're trying to prove some point with him. [ Reply | More ]

op: I didn't say to him he was wrong. I told him that he knew I wasn't going to be rude to my guest and make them wait because someone was late. I said if anyone tells him he's wrong he gets pissy [ Reply | More ]

But how do you know he gets pissy if anyone tells him he's wrong? From your description, everyone but you caters to his lateness by waiting for him. [ Reply | More ]

I know he gets pissy because some of the guys (his friends) tell him once things settle down. The only couple that catered to his lateness was that one couple in NJ who had the party and are his best friends (well the dh is). Believe me I posted this just to share my story. I guess to show how some ppl who are late think [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand why there is even an issue here. Why wouldn't you just say laughingly, "Oh, Jack, I knew you wouldn't really want us all to wait until 10:30 to eat!"? [ Reply | More ]

op: yes his best friends who hosted waited. It was horrible because ppl were starving and we (mostly from the city) drove 1.5 hrs to get to their NJ home [ Reply | More ]

I still don't get how the host lacked that much common sense. Also, what time was this party? [ Reply | More ]

Well, obviously, people cater to his lateness, which they shouldn't do, but you seem to want to prove to him that he *shouldn't* be late, which is not going to accomplish anything either. [ Reply | More ]

If I was at a party, and I was starving, at the hosts were not serving food, I would leave with dh and get something to eat--it is because you all bend over backwards for this guy that you resent it so much. [ Reply | More ]

But from your description you ("we") were starving. No wonder you are so upset about his lateness in that case--I would have left and gotten something to eat. [ Reply | More ]

op: yes the host was calling and he kept saying I'm close by..BS..he didn't even leave his home yet (in the Bronx) and had to drive over 1.5 hrs to get to the home of the host [ Reply | More ]

OK, so this guy is chronically, pathologically late--we get it. But that doesn't mean you have to cater to it (by staying at a party where you are starving but the host won't feed you) or take it upon yourself to try to change his ways (by telling him he is wrong to be so late). [ Reply | More ]

sounds like a very small town post to me. first, there are cocktails first, second, everybody is late, and third, being late for a business meeting is rude, but for a party - please please please. that's what the parties are for. boring boring boring [ Reply | More ]

agree. op is just boring, and her friend probably has other things that he prefers to do, but is too polite to miss her parties altogether. wake up, lady. plus he probably assumed that he was invited 5hrs earlier, i mean, technically, at what time did you invite him for dinner, at 2pm? duh? op: ok you need to read my post. I was not the one inviting him to a dinner party at 2pm like you so nicely put..it was another couple. I just posted this off of the late post so I could give my experience with someone who was rude and always late. You are reading WAY too much into it [ Reply | More ]
