I agree with these. I think its also a weird attempt at some sort of power play. I don't tolerate this in friends/colleagues of mine (they get a few strikes, but then they're out.) [ Reply | More ]

That's my MIL, her way of controlling... everyone will have to wait for me. [ Reply | More ]

I run late. I try to be on time, but often fail by 5-15 minutes. It relates to my chronic habit of underestimating how long it takes me to complete a project, run an errand, etc. Sometimes I only give myself the exact amount of time necessary to get someplace without factoring in late trains, no taxis, traffic. For social events, I don't see the point in "rushing" to have a fun lunch or get to a party. My friends know this -- they also know I never care when they run late, change our plans at the last minute, or cancel. When it's important -- like work, dropping/picking up kids at school, an important appointment -- I clear the decks and make sure I'm on time. [ Reply | More ]

That's obnoxious. If you know you chronically underestimate the time it takes to get somewhere, you should factor that in. It's like saying, "I'm rude - and if you don't like it, too bad." [ Reply | More ]

ditto. the reason for this is that time doesn't matter much to me. I always aim to be on time but I don't stress out over this to be exact on time. Plus minus 30 minutes is okay in my book. There are occasions, though, when I am rather early like for job interviews or other non-social events. [ Reply | More ]

I would never ever be your friend. I work, and every spare minute I have goes to my children. If I took time out to meet you for lunch and you were 30 minutes late, that would be our last lunch together. Don't you realize the message you are sending to people, which is that your time is more important than theirs? [ Reply | More ]

depends on their age. If they are youngish, I sort of think "they'll learn." If they are not young, it drives me crazy. It is irresponsible and disrespectful to the people they keep waiting. [ Reply | More ]

I am always late. Op, you should not take it so personally. I realize that it is a shortcoming on my part, but I am an extremely organized, methodical person and find it hard to move to the next thing without feeling I have adequately completed my immediate tasks. i.e. I cannot stand going out in the morning without making the beds and straightening the apartment, even if it is going to make me late. I suppose it also has to do with difficulty making transitions. It is more complex for some than selfishness. [ Reply | More ]

but that has to do with selfishness-your needs over others who are waiting for you [ Reply | More ]

wait. why is this selfish? You both just have a different take on what time means to you. Since you cannot tolerate her interpretation it is also selfish of you. [ Reply | More ]

that makes no sense. the selfishness has to do with being focused solely on her needs, not being considerate of someone else's time. if two people agree to meet at a mutually agreed upon time, that means they both found a time that works for them. if one person gets caught up with their own things (like making the beds) to the point wher eit can't wait to see the other person, selfish of them to only think of their needs, not other's time. I disagree with this. If you know me you know that even though we agreed on a time I will most likely be a little late. Just build this into the expectation. As I said, you and I interpret time and timeliness in different ways. If you cannot deal with this that is fine by me. Look for another friend. [ Reply | More ]

np: Why should the burden of adding time be on the prompt person? Shouldn't the late person build time into her schedule BEFORE meeting the friend? [ Reply | More ]

Look, I said it is a shortcoming, but it is a mental process that does not equate to weighing your needs vs. someone else's. It may be perceived as selfish by you, but that is not the intent. There is something else that drives it. [ Reply | More ]

I think there are two types of people who are chronically late. The first is the type who is generally well meaning but terrible at scheduling, organization, etc and is always harried running from one place to another (like one of my best friends). The second is the type who has no regard for the value of another person's time and never even has the intention of being on time. [ Reply | More ]

ita. I have a friend with 6 children. She is always late, despite every effort to be on time. I completely understand. Much different that a person who can't be bothered to get somewhere on time. [ Reply | More ]

In a work situation, it's a power play -- IMO unless the person is the CEO, they should be on time. Otherwise, it's disrespectful to everyone else at the meeting. [ Reply | More ]

OR with the theory of two types... ITA. At my last job (before I left for the greener pastures of self employment) no one was ever on time for meetings and it was so obviously out of a lack of respect. [ Reply | More ]

I depends on what you are talking about. Are you talking about a party or any group meeting? If so, people who are a little late are the cool ones. People who are early are anal, geeky and rude. People who are on-time are nervous straight edges...boring. [ Reply | More ]

It's a cultural thing. There are many different ways to interpret time. Notorious late-comers don't intend to be late. It is just they don't stress out and if that means they'll be a few minutes late so be it. [ Reply | More ]
