i'm not snarking but i'm really curious. how different is a gifted and talented program from a regular class? and why don't the public schools just have different levels in each public school so they don't need a separate gifted and talented program? (i.e. you get zoned for your school and then they have an advanced class and a regular class). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

from what I heard they teach the same things but a bit accelerated (sp?) in the G&T..not like the G&T class is many levels ahead of their gen. ed counterparts [ Reply | More ]

My dc is finishing K at NEST. The class is all reading. Many at second or third grade level. They are doing addition and subtraction of two digit numbers. Their reading log has them writing about topics like characters, theme, setting, etc. I have no idea what other K classes are doing. [ Reply | More ]

My dd just finished K at a private school that gets slammed here all the time for "not teaching anything" and she is doing multi-part addition and subtraction word problems and simple multiplication, she reads and writes, in science the children come up with a hypothesis and then design an experiment to test it. I'm not saying NEST isn't great -- I'm sure it's an excellent school. But the kids in my dd's class aren't "gifted" they are just normal kindergarteners. [ Reply | More ]

i guess i'm just a negligent mom. i have no idea what the kids in her class are doing. also, she's in pre-k. maybe the kindergarten will be more structured. [ Reply | More ]

If your child is in K and you are blissfully ignorant, why do you frequent this board? [ Reply | More ]

My dc is in a general ed K class. All the children are reading, a couple on second grade level (I know because teacher had to get books from second grade teacher). They do double digit addition and subtraction, fractions, geometry. What is the point of all of this. Every class is different even within the same school. Find a school you like, send your child. Everybody happy. If not, find another one. There are A LOT of choices in nyc. [ Reply | More ]

OR: OP asked the difference between G&T and a regular class. I had information for half of the answer (not complete information but one class worth.) I provided that information. Nothing more. [ Reply | More ]

i'd think that would be the most efficient way to do things. so you don't have to apply to different schools. and the classrooms can also be run more efficiently. [ Reply | More ]
