How much do the kids and parents interact among Anderson/PS 9 G&T/ PS 9? Are the three gruops really as segregated as I hear? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Anderson mom here. Anderson has separate classes, lunch & recess from PS9 so they don't really interact in school, but they are all together in afterschool. I interact with plenty of PS9 parents because there are many many families who have kids in both schools. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I'm a new Anderson mom. Can you tell me what time the kindergarteners have lunch? Do they eat with the 1st graders? Also, how are the K teachers? What are they like? Warm/fuzzy, strict/formal? And if there was 1 thing you could change about the school, what would it be? Thanks! [ Reply | More ]

Welcome! I am sure you will be very happy. I don't know what time the K'ers eat or if it's with the 1st graders. The K teachers are not the same ones as when my kids were in K, but I think they tend more toward warm fuzzy than strict formal. There are a couple of things I would change about the school (don't love Everyday Math) but mostly I love it. [ Reply | More ]

Another A parent: K kids eat lunch at 11:30, not sure who else is in the cafeteria. The K teachers are great, in the beggining they are a bit strict to set the rules but seem to ease up after the first month or two. [ Reply | More ]

np: Lunch times between PS 9 and Anderson switch from year to year. This year Anderson had early lunch (11:30) so next year it will be late (12:30), but that means K-2 will have early snack in their classroom instead of late snack. [ Reply | More ]

Can I say something. My child attends a different school, and I don't interact with any of the parents except the ones in my dc's class?? Why and when would I? [ Reply | More ]

I certainly interact with parents from other grades in another school. There are all kinds of reasons and ways to meet parents. My child is in private school and perhaps this is more common in private. I've been surprised when I talked with friends who have kids in public schools and they don't know kids in their child's grade. [ Reply | More ]

My K child (G&T) interacts with the other PS9 classes during music, recess, afterschool and some coordinated class events. Some interaction with Anderson kids in afterschool. We interact with other parents that we know from our pre-school or who live nearby. [ Reply | More ]

As an example... today was pS9 Kindergarten Sing. All 4 classes performed together in the auditorium for the parents. Very cute! [ Reply | More ]

Was this general ed or G&T and general ed together? I don't know what you mean by "all 4 classes." [ Reply | More ]

When do the kids figure out that there are different kinds of classes? [ Reply | More ]

if the classes are as racially segregated as when I toured a few of years ago, I'd figure that the kids would notice (and draw some bad conclusions) pretty darn quick. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson is a different school that happens to be housed in the same building as PS 9. [ Reply | More ]

why do people keep repeating this. seems anderson is having a hard time forming its identity or something. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I think they keep repeating it because many posters seem to think that Anderson is still a program within PS 9. They can't seem to grasp that in NYC, 2 separate schools can share a building - and that's it. [ Reply | More ]

lol! of course people know it is now a separate school. but the anderson moms are overstating it in a way that makes it sound way too important ot them. who cares. they started as a ps9 program and after 20 yrs got separate school status. we get it. now relax. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a PS 9 mom and I always state it here that Anderson is a separate school, mostly because I'm tired of people asking me about Anderson. [ Reply | More ]
