It seems like every other kid I know got 99 on either SB, ERB or Olsat. Strangely, it seems "normal" to get this kind of score in the city and anyone who gets below 90 seems like you will struggle to be in a class full of these other kids. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Well, the parents I know told me they're sending their kids to Anderson, Hunter, TTs or top G&T, so I don't think they lied. Some didn't tell me but I know their dc's must have bec there is no way non-sib could have gotten in w/o 99 [ Reply | More ]

You know a bunch of people (i) with really smart kids or (ii) who did a lot of prep with their kids or both. [ Reply | More ]

A lot of smart kids bombed the OLSAT. You're an idiot for thinking that OLSAT given to 4 yos is accurate and predictive of future performance. And, no, my dc did not bomb the test -- too young to take it. [ Reply | More ]

right, but a lot of kids who scored below 90 are plenty smart, especially the boys who bombed it b/c they didn't have the patience for it at this age (I know plenty of boys who did well on the SB and ERB but bombed the OLSAT). So your assumption that kids who scored under 90 will struggle with kids who scored above is based on faulty reasoning. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, there seemed to be a lot of 99s. We were very lucky - our dd tested very well and so did many of her friends - wonder if the preschool prep was a big part since they all went to the same school. [ Reply | More ]

It's because you're talking about a very narrow segment of the world - people who can afford to live with children in Manhattan. You're talking about a group of parents who are generally highly successful and often highly educated themselves, which translates to having a higher percentage of children who will score very well and have similar traits to their parents. I think in NY, these scores, although not "normal" are much more common than nationally. It's not just people lying. However, I also think that the difference between a 95 and an 85 given that you are testing 4 year olds is pretty minor in terms of classroom success. They're both smart, and I'm sure can do great. from everything I've read, it sounds like this OLSAT is just a way to weed out the kids that can pay attention, listen to directions and follow them... and also I have to say that the G&T programs are misnamed [ Reply | More ]

Don't be silly. The kids still have to reason out the answers to the questions. It just weeds out the smart kids who can't pay attention and listen to directions, leaving the smart kids who can. [ Reply | More ]
