Public school moms... how much do you/will you pay out of your own pocket to have an asst. teacher in your child's K or 1st grade classroom? Also, when does one make this payment? Does it mean no Asst. teacher shows up until enough $ has been collected? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that isn't really how it is done. The PTA raises money. Sometimes they pick what they will use the money for and sometimes the principal picks. The PTA is not allowed to hire or fund staff. What actually happens is, they raise the money and the principal uses that money for something else - and then has her budget money free to pay for assistants in the classrooms. Not all schools/teachers want assistants in the classroom. So, if this is something you are trying to organize in your school, I would first find out if principal is remotely interested and then go about getting the PTA to fundraise. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, and I guess I didn't answer your question. I won't pay any more or any less to the annual fund or acution (or veritable pletheora of other fundraising opportunites) based on assistants in the K or first grade. We give about 10K [ Reply | More ]

Um - ok. All I know is they told us it is an option and they nicely suggested an amt. to give if you could. I am curious what other gen ed publics seek or if they do this. [ Reply | More ]

Our school did not ask for money only from the K/1 parents. They figured out how much an aid would cost and voted (in PTA) about spending the money on it. [ Reply | More ]

I was trying to be helpful. Sorry. YOu have to be VERY careful - the DOE comes down hard on schools that say they do this. I know. It happened in our school. I was telling OP how to go about it without having someone complain to DOE about haves and have nots. [ Reply | More ]

I would gladly contribute $$ to do this, but it doesn't sound like it's an option (Nest) [ Reply | More ]

Oh but you are in the "gifted" school. Your kids are so smart they won't need another teacher anyway. LOL [ Reply | More ]

At our school the PTA actually asks for a donation for the annual fund and a separate amount towards assistants for K and 1st grade. I contribute the amount asked for each, not more or less. I also constribute additional $ at the auction and other fund raisers throughtout the year. [ Reply | More ]

PS116 mom. $600 per year, and they will hit you up on the first day of school, or before. They assume that they will get enough money to last through at least the first 1/2 year, and then they make a second appeal when they get close to running out of money in February. [ Reply | More ]

not all schools do it and very few teachers want an assistant in their room. it actually makes more work for her. better to have a very skilled teacher with lots of opportunities for parents to come in and help out. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that not all do it (most don't), I agree that some teachers don't want it. Some principals don't want it either. [ Reply | More ]

Not necessarily true. In K, assistant can take kids to the bathroom and help kids w/ other basic administrative stuff, freeing up teacher to do more uninterrupted teaching. [ Reply | More ]
