when do i call zoned school and let them know dc is not coming - it's seriously over-crowded and they have asked that we let them know ASAP. Have not yet registered dc at new school but will do so next week - would you wait until he is actually registered or is it safe now? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

b/c it is not DOE you are disadvantaging, it is the school and other families like you (who may be making decisions to move, pay for private, etc. based on there being no spot for them at that zoned school. [ Reply | More ]

IMO, safe now to tell them you're not coming IF registration at new school comes through without a hitch. You have the letter guranteeing you your spot. Unfair to zoned school and other parents who may be waiting for spots there to wait longer. [ Reply | More ]

I just pulled my dd's registration file from our zoned school because we'll be registering at citywide G&T next week. The zoned school wanted to see our G&T acceptance letter, and made me sign a written statement saying that I don't want my dd registered there! So bizarre. And I'm so glad that I won't have to deal with them! [ Reply | More ]

It's not bizarre. They want to finalize their numbers asap. There's quite a bit involved in budgeting, class assignments etc., and having to deal with it so late into the school year is difficult for all. [ Reply | More ]

well, i guess the doe should have taken that into consideration when they made this process drag out for SOOOO long [ Reply | More ]

OR: When I asked to take our paperwork, the lady first told me that they could not give it to me because they were going to shred it. I told her that she would be saving me a lot of work if instead of shredding it, she gave it to me (!!). Then she made me sign the written statement, and when I asked why, she said it was so that I couldn't come back later if I changed my mind. (Again, ?!?!?!) [ Reply | More ]

When I registered dc for G&T I said I had already registered her at zoned school and the G&T school said they would notify the other school because it would come up in the system that she was registered. I'm not sure they all work like this but I was surprised we wouldn't have to make the call. [ Reply | More ]

I called the zoned school, and they said that the DOE would do it as a transfer when they registered her for the second school. The first school doesn't need to do anything. [ Reply | More ]

Please don't wait for the G&T school to call. They are busy scrambling to get their classes and numbers together. If you can, please notify your zoned school. It really does help them figure out budgets, class configurations, etc. and the earlier the better. Many thanks from a gen'l ed. parent. [ Reply | More ]

The G&T school doesn’t call. When they enter the child’s registration, it comes up as a transfer and they enter the code to permit it (given to them by the DOE). Then the zoned school is notified of the transfer. At this point, there is nothing the zoned school can do to change the registration, only the g&t school can do it. There is no point in calling the zoned school unless they are really behind and haven’t entered your dc’s information yet. [ Reply | More ]

does this work the same way for option schools like Midtown West? [ Reply | More ]

Yes. At least it worked that way for a "transfer" from zoned to a D3 lottery school. [ Reply | More ]

You're assuming the information of transfer is instantaneous, which is a lot to assume based on the DOE's track record. If it's the same to you, call the Gen Ed school once you're registered at your G&T school. Thx. [ Reply | More ]

I did. This IS what the gen ed school is telling me. Once they enter DC's registration, there is nothing they can do until they get the official transfer from the DOE when the second school inputs their registration. After they told me that, I called the DOE and they confirmed it. By all means call your zoned school if you feel like it, but they can't do anything (like admit more kids or set classes) until the transfer goes through, and most don't really want to be bothered talking to you. That makes a lot of sense. There is really no need to keep each school up-to-date as long as DOE's computer system keeps track of every student. [ Reply | More ]

FYI - on Inside Schools someone has posted that when they went to register dc at G&T school, school told them that because DOE over-enrolled, all registrations are "pending", not definite. http://www.insideschools.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3530 [ Reply | More ]

That was one specific school. Since every school has its own registration process it was probably just a one-off event. Once the school realizes that not all of the assigned families will sign up they will turn the "pending" to "registered:. [ Reply | More ]

That parents letter was from OSEPO, not from the specific school. [ Reply | More ]

It was the school that gave her a letter saying that the OSEPO over-subscribed the G&T program at her school. There was no mentioning that the placement office is in any way involved in this. [ Reply | More ]
