Window guards. Anyone BTDT. I rent, I have casement windows from the 1920s/30s that open up completely, and my super says they don't make window guards anymore for those windows. I've called 311 and I'm working my way through the system but looking for anyone whose dealt with this? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

That's nonsense and it's the landlord's responsibility to supply the guards BY LAW. There are various types of guards, including the little bars that go up about one foot. I have those and have the 1920s/30s casement windows [ Reply | More ]

I would call every applicable number in the blue pages. I would also walk around, find a building with the same windows and guards and give address to super. Tell him he has a week. [ Reply | More ]

By law if a child under 7yo lives in the apartment (or visits regularly) the landlord has to fit window guards if the windows open more than about 4". Tell your landlord to fix this straight away. [ Reply | More ]

absolutely the owner's responsibility, not yours. do you research for them how to find and install a legal heating system or like that? [ Reply | More ]

If your landlord refuses then inform DofH and they will make them do it (and will find lots of other things that need doing to the apartment too so your landlord will not want them involved). I'm guessing they don't do the annual lead testing either! [ Reply | More ]

Okay, (OP here). I know it's not my job but the super is sweet but so *%*$*X@ useless. He can't fix anything. I don't trust him to find the safe solution and I just want it done. I can't believe I let him tell me they don't make bars for our windows (they don't but you can use a chain). I called 311 and got an experts name there for the super to call. They said I need chains. If they are not up in a week I'll report the building. [ Reply | More ]

yes. There are chains that you put on the windows. I have casement windows and they work beautifully. Your super can put them on. The window will only open about 3-4 inches. [ Reply | More ]
