real estate q (riverdale, if that matters): all brokers here seem to be buyers agents. saw an apt i like, but wary of only using the broker that is selling the place, as no one is "looking out" for my interests, kwim? should i just get another broker willing to "show" me a place i've already seen and liked? i'm flustered here. We bought our place in manhattan without a broker. Your lawyer will look out for your interests. RE brokers are just middle men (and women) [ Reply | More ]

ask around...heck, ask the seller's agent. RE agents have tons of names of lawyers, contractors, civil engineers, etc. I'm sure he/she could refer you to someone ...once hired, the lawyer represents you....if you don't trust the agent, have dh ask around at work. We used this guy a few years back -- http://www.lawyers.com/New-York/New-York/Richard-B.-Feldman-4165983-a.html [ Reply | More ]

you can go without a broker. It's easier imo. Ask friends/ family members for recommendations. Or just look one up online on yellow pages. GL [ Reply | More ]

I would go ahead and find someone else to show you the property. I would also get a lawyer. But good brokers will be on the look out for problems. Definately don't use the sellers broker, because that just means that they get the whole the commission without any representation to you. [ Reply | More ]

thx. this is my concern. and frankly, it's a buyers market, so i'm concerned about looking out for myself and my interests, and not so much about getting a great place--there are tons of places out there. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I think you are deluding yourself if you think any broker is going to look out for your interests. Hire a civil engineer to inspect the place. Do you think a broker is going to steer you away from a sale? [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, a good agent wants to see you happy in a house. As long as you are not a pain in the ass client, they will be pretty honest because it is in there long term best interest. This only applies if you are very focused and don't drag them to 100 houses and agonize over each one. [ Reply | More ]

^^^I used to work for a realtor and these were her favorite deals. She would start salivating if even a whiff of one showed up. Let me tell you, there was no way should would let these deals fall through if there was anything she could do about it, including some serious bending of the truth. [ Reply | More ]
