So annoying. Inherited summer house with my brother (he owns 25% we own 75%) and he and his wife are there now. They call me every day to give me little complaints and assignments. Their dcs have told me they own the place too. (I know I'm being silly now) Shared real estate sucks. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

my parents began gifting my dh and I and my brother years ago. My brother then had a huge, bitter fight with them and they stopped the gifting. He let them both pass away w/o resolving it and did not invite my mother to his wedding. Terrible stuff. [ Reply | More ]

You're right and he's gotten back much of what he's given to others in life. But he and his wife and children are my only relatives so I've focused on keeping our relationship healthy. [ Reply | More ]

We've thought about buying him out but he told me that he considers the house to be his children's legacy and wants his ashes scattered nearby. He comes in the off season - the end of June because he can't afford to pay the rent in the high season. We treat it as rental property and everyone has to pay their way. [ Reply | More ]

i'm confused -- if you own it, why do you pay rent? do you consider that the mortgage? [ Reply | More ]

it's rental property for IRS purposes. We do the whole expense and depreciation thing. Everyone gets a k-1 etc. We pay the annual expenses through the rental and anyone of us who uses the house from 7/1 through labor day have to pay rent. It makes sense. [ Reply | More ]
