G&T moms - did you go into some kind of privilleged, G&T program yourselves? Was it helpful? Do you value that experience? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no - my school in the middle of nowhere 20+ years ago really didn't even offer anything like g/t. DH however was always in 'special classes', schools and went to special art school - he sees good and bad to it and we factored some of his experience into our choice - nest - all one school; kids won't feel different, will be challenged. ^^^ Plus, as first OR said, I grew up in the country. The only thing we had was some minimal tracking and a few AP courses in high school. [ Reply | More ]

I was in a G&T program, I chose mainstream for my DS. It was not a positive experience for me. [ Reply | More ]

The crazy moms here? The program I was in was full of them. Stressed out kids, competitive even in fourth grade. We even had a case of sabotage on projects when I was in sixth grade. [ Reply | More ]

Me, too! Academically great, but socially a nightmare. Totally incestuous being with the same kids all the time. Competitive in a very bad way. Emphasized intelligence over the many other wonderful features and talents the kids have. Skewed view of the world and skewed sense of self/priorities. Nightmare parents--too much pressure and the wrong kind. I chose mainstream for DD, want her to have a happier and more well-rounded experience than I had. I was with the same kids from K through HS and have never once talked to any of them after graduation...whereas most of the mainstream kids from my old HS are still in touch with each other. G&T is great in NYC because it gives you more options over a very crappy zoned school, but I'd take strong Gen Ed over weak G&T any day. You can supplement academically, but you can't erase the kind of stuff that goes on in G&T, as is obvious from the parents on this board! There are too many G&T parents here that I would NOT want to be on a PA with! [ Reply | More ]

We lucked out that we are in a great zoned school too. Glad I'm not the only one - being here on UB made me wonder if I was the only one who felt this way. [ Reply | More ]
