cars are the biggest problem most Americans get into, but not usually in New York. Can you axe expenses? Cable - gone! Restaurant meals - gone! that sort of thing? How much do you need to cut each month to be at breakeven? [ Reply | More

no car payments. but we can't downgrade. we need the space for a big car. and selling our car for an older model just doesn't make sense b/c of repair costs. we really live very simply...never vacation, no cable, don't use babysitters a lot. but we'll have to start cutting back on groceries and the minor expenses that add up. we already got rid of our phone plan. we do have cell phones but i don't know if it's worth it to give it up. and we'll have to limit air conditioner use this summer b/c i'm betting that will be a big expense. we were on one income and really breaking even. being very careful about budgeting, etc. then i went back to work and i think we felt so wealthy that we just started spending more...didn't budget for groceries as much, etc. And we just got the bill for next years tuition and it's a full day tuition (parochial school, but still a lot) and it's just making me realize that we need to cut back a lot. and we'll probably be back at teh breaking even point. and i really wanted to get out of this rental and buy a house and it's just not looking likely.
