Could someone please explain the stereotypes associated with Chapin, Spence & Brearly? (I realize they may be innacurate or outdated) Several women have referred to each school having a "type," but when I ask for clarification I never get an answer or I am told "you'll see when you tour." True. And HM is known for having the richest. But Dalton has richer families than, say, Brooklyn and downtown schools. [ Reply | More ]

What are you talking about? HM is not known for having the richest families. It's known for being the most Jewish, and insufferable. [ Reply | More ]

OP -- The vague stereotypes I heared varied from Chapin = blond, preppy Republicans to Brearley = bed-raggled, intellectual, intense, socialists. Spence was wealthy, connected, spoiled. All seem silly, but many people rightly or wrongly still say things like, "I would never send my daughter to X" I just scratch my head. Even though I don't buy into the stereotypes, I'd like to know what they are so I can debunk them on my own. [ Reply | More ]

You buy into the stereotypes! You're the one asking about it! I mean, we all know 'you can't judge a book by its cover.' Why not just treat all of the kids as if they have good hearts, regardless of their background? [ Reply | More ]

I don't like stereotypes & find that they bear little semblance to reality. That said, stereotypes do come from somewhere and many people still believe them even when they are outdated etc. I'm not from NYC, but starting to apply to NYC schools. When I ask questions, parents say they do not like X school's reputation for preppy/spoiled/intense kids/parents/faculty etc. I want to at least know the general vibe or reputation. I can and will disregard it after I tour schools and form my own opinion. [ Reply | More ]

MOST kids won't come close to getting into tt. Don't worry about reps and stereotypes until you're sitting there with multiple acceptances. Total waste of time. [ Reply | More ]

If you really don't like negativity- you wouldn't court it. You would use your own eyes and sense. Repeating negative stereotypes continues them. [ Reply | More ]

People can say they "would never send their dd to C/B/S" as if they had a good chance to begin with. 150 girls a year start K in these three schools combine. And anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of them are sibs and legs. [ Reply | More ]

We are a very Waspy family at Spence. Predeominanly Wasps at the school and historically hugely Waspy. There are some Jewish families. At Chapin, where my best friend attended, it is also Waspy. My friend is a Wasp. She says there are about the same number of Jewish families there as there are at Spence but it is predominantly Jewish wives so they hide it better (via their names and actions, except for the very Jewish Seinfelds). She jokingly refers to the Chapin jews as "Waspy Jews" since they aspire to Waspy values. You see that at Spence too but there might be a few more Jewish names. Brearly has the most jews of either of the 3 schools and is more diverse. There are very few blacks or Asians at Spence or Chapin. Probably a few more hispanics. Horace Mann is the most Jewish school in the world. They say its the holy grail (no pun intended) for the truly Jewish moms and dads. Dalton a close second. Buckley like Spence and Chapin. Definitely jews but more like Chapin jews with jewish moms so their names are hidden but they aspire to be "Waspy". St Bernards is Waspy as well. When it comes to wealth though, no other school is close to Spence. there are so many billionaire families with good hearts there. When the new lower school was constructed, basically three families wrote the $50 m check. For the new facility just purchased recently, same thing. No new capital campaign was needed. Recent count is 12 billionaire families, mostly with daughters in school and a few on Board?council. God knows how many are worth more than $250 m. But you really cannot notice it. Believe me, if the Falcons get in, no one will notice. As facilities and location go, nothing beats Spence. Off 5th Avenue in Carnegie Hill. Lower school spectacular. New building on 90 Street spectacular. Will be ready in 2 years. Adds campus like feel. Upper School a little cramped but this new buidling will solve it. Chapin has agreat building but bad location. Brearly has a bad building and bad location. Sacred Heart has an amazing buidling but squeezed badly. St Bernards and NBS are very nice locations and buildings. [ Reply | More ]
