We never applied to privates before. Do we have a shot at 1st grade at Dalton, Trinity, etc after being accepted into G&T? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i am not saying i am unhappy, but i just learned how great dalton is. i always felt intimidated that it's only for super-rich and super-connected, and aparently, it's not so. [ Reply | More ]

if you were intimidated by the breakdown of the school population then it really isn't the school for you. yes, dalton is a diverse school but diversity is the minority there. [ Reply | More ]

I went to dalton and it isn't the most diverse place, but I had plenty of friends whose parents were teachers, accountants, etc. Compared to some nyc privates. money doesn't buy morons into the school. [ Reply | More ]

np; this is true. I think they used to have this reputation a long time ago, and maybe it is still a bit like that for HS, but I think it's really different for Lower & middle school. I read UB posts and thought D might be full of entitled uber rich, but I've met a lot of regular Joe/Jane like me there. Met a lot of down to earth parents, though there must be some who are not like that... In any case, I love the community and dc loooves it. [ Reply | More ]

1st is not a big entry point. I would think a Hunter to Dalton switch could be attractive to Babby, but you need people to move. [ Reply | More ]

This is what we did for our dc. There are several kids from Hunter at D, including some teachers. [ Reply | More ]

very few schools have openings for 1st grade. usually they will only give you a wait list application b/c class size doesn't increase, so there is only a spot if someone leaves, and that rarely happens by 1st grade. The exceptions are St. Anns, Packer and Fieldston Lower, which actually increase in size for first grade so they always take new kids at that point. [ Reply | More ]
