Medical costs totally shock me. I just got two bills for medical procedures and they are jaw-droppingly high amounts. I'd say thank goodness i have insurance except that i have this suspicion that the insurance system is partially responsible for the high prices. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

they are scary. terrible thing is the insurance gets away with paying less - if you don't have it you have to pay the full amount. [ Reply | More ]

i got billed $15,000 for a procedure. Insurance covered it and paid them $500. I don't understand how they have this set up. But i'm just relieved I had my little $20 copay and i'm done with it. [ Reply | More ]

but if you did not have your insurance, you'd have to pay 15K - unbelievable! [ Reply | More ]

i'm really not understanding how this works. what's to stop people from charging $6 million for every procedure adn then just getting the standard amount from the insurance companies and as much as they can from the poor schmuks without insurance? [ Reply | More ]

exactly. that is really sick. and the medical costs are super inflated because the hospitals employ tons of employees, whose job is to deal with insuarance companies. [ Reply | More ]

Now imagine what would happen if God forbid you or DH lost their job and you had a medical crisis... this is why the system is broken and must be fixed. We can't be afraid of changing the system drastically. We should fear letting it decay as it is now... [ Reply | More ]

they were being sarcastic, and I got that... I also know that there are many things we do well and the system as it is now is broken... just awful... socialized medicine works in virtually every Westernized nation and there's no reason we cannot do it here other than the fear of the word "socialized"... op: you know what i think would make a difference? if doctors posted their fees. most service related industries list their fees in a brochure or on the wall when you get there. i think if people (even the ones with insurance) had an idea of what doctors are charging, you'd see big time changes in the medical industry. If my doctor is charging $100 for dc's well visit and i see that hanging on the wall, i'm not going to be so happy sitting in the waiting room for 45 minutes. If that stupid plastic surgeon had told me he'd charge $2500 to put six stitches into dc's head and that insurance wouldn't cover it, i would've said 'forget it. i'll have a resident do it'. There's this secrecy about medical costs that i think is contributing a lot to the great expense [ Reply | More ]

MD"s receive only a portion of their fee and are told often times what to charge... it is a shitty system we have... [ Reply | More ]

i think if prices and costs were more transparent, that would do a lot to fix the system. it would make the exorbitant prices be reduced. [ Reply | More ]
