Does anyone have any idea which shapes (besides the obvious) were on the Bracken test? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My kid did really bad on that subtest. I kind of wonder, too, because she pretty much aced all the other subtests. I put a request to review the test in but have not heard back from anybody. [ Reply | More ]

I believe pyramid, cylinder, octagon, hexagon, pentagon, cube, sphere, but not positive. [ Reply | More ]

np: How can this be an indicator of intelligence for a 4yo? If a child has never been shown those shapes before, he cannot know what they are - even if he is a genius. So much would depend on exposure and parenting. [ Reply | More ]

its a school readiness test. its the test they use for g&t. That's all. It is what it is and you don't have to take it. [ Reply | More ]

I am just reacting to how it is used to determine a very important path for children, especially ones that will otherwise be left in a bad school with no support. [ Reply | More ]

The path (elementary school g&t) is not as important as it seems to you at this moment in time. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's important for any of the children whose mothers post here. Might be VERY important for a kid in East New York. [ Reply | More ]

The BRSA has nothing to do with intelligence. It's more a knowledge test. [ Reply | More ]

Right. So why is it used as the only criteria (if I understand correctly) for the G&T program? [ Reply | More ]

np--it's not the only criteria. it was worth 25%; the olsat was 75%. [ Reply | More ]

that isn't waht they based the "giftedness" on the OLSAT was the gifted indicator. The Bracken was only 25% of the test [ Reply | More ]

np. The BSRA is not an intelligence test; no one from the DOE or its publisher ever claimed it was. It's a school readiness assessment. The OLSAT is the component that tests cognition. [ Reply | More ]

Which shows that it is a test of whether your parents have taught you this stuff, rather than a test of intelligence! [ Reply | More ]

my dd bombed shapes on bracken but did great on olsat and got 97 on bracken otherwise. i feel so bad not prepping her, she would have got a 99 otherwise and would have ended up in A. Oh well :-) [ Reply | More ]

my son got all but 1 right on the shapes section. he knows what an octagon is, but i don't think he would ever say "cylinder or sphere". so i don't think that was on the test. i could be wrong, but i have never heard him say sphere [ Reply | More ]

I think it's more like showing 3 pics and asking which one is the sphere. He may be able to do it by process of elimination [ Reply | More ]

fyi, i'm betting they'll drop the bracken next year because 1) everyone now knows what's on it and 2) it was meant to help disadvantaged dcs and i doubt very much it did [ Reply | More ]

To the contrary, next year every public school student will be given the Bracken to help identify deficiencies. Not sure if they'll include it in G&T, but they'll need some other component besides OLSAT and everything else is too subjective [ Reply | More ]

i'm talking about g&t (which is the context of this thread). now that every ub'er knows to teach their dc what a hexagon is, the whole notion of it helping disadvantaged dcs is a bit moot. i'll bet you ten dollars it's not part of the g&t testing next year. they really don't need anything besides the olsat. Wasn't the original plan that the BRSA is given first to identify deficiencies? If the kid passes the BRSA he would haven given the OLSAT for G&T placement. [ Reply | More ]

Before the Bracken (that means last year) the preschool teachers were supposed to evaluate your kids' "academic achievement" through a few essay questions. I guess the BRSA is supposed to replace this. [ Reply | More ]
