Does anyone else think it is really f**ked up that NYC has a 40% c-section rate??? I find this really shocking and I think it's awful that as a pg woman in NY you face such a huge likelihood of having an unnecessary cesarean. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My water broke, I went to the hospital, and after 2 days and 2 rounds of induction, I never fully dilated, only getting to 8cm. Additionally, my 7lb, 4 oz. baby boy never dropped down and my pelvis was not large enough to allow his head to pass through. The result was a C. Should I have sat there, waters broken, risking infection for another 2 days hoping to dilate so I could push and have a vaginal birth? Absolutely not. I was on oxygen for the last 4 hours before the C and the doctors were concerned about infection. For subsequent pregnancies, VBAC is not an option for me and believe me, I've seen 4 different top doctors on this. Flame all you want, but I don't think the risk is worth it in certain cases, so take your righteous attitude elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

how are you drawing the conclusion that this reflect a "huge" likelihood of an "unnecessary cesarean"? What percentage of that 40% are "unnecessary"? Signed, mom who had full placenta previa and had no option but a C-section. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I think WHO says that C-section rates should be around 10-15% and that if it's far above that, then some of those C-sections are not medically necessary. That doesn't mean yours wasn't. [ Reply | More ]

But that's a general statistic. if NYC has a disporpotiantely large population of older mothers, and high risk patients (e.g., women who come from the surrounding area specifically because they want to have their high risk delivery at a top notch hospital) then it's going to throw the numbers off. What I'd like to see before jumping to the "unnecessary" conclusion is the stats on what % are not medically required. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Yes, I knew that when I cited the "ideal" rate, but I don't think that the older and high-risk patients could possibly account for the 25% disparity. It's probably due overwhelmingly to our litigious medical culture (doctors being afraid of being sued if things go wrong). In a place like NY, I think that you can't ignore the less important but notable "trendy" factor - people love imitating celebrities and celebrities often get elective C-sections. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry I disagree with this. No one pushes you into c-sec. You are either higher risk than they are comfortable with or you schedule it for convenience of schedules yours or your doctors. And if you doc. is the kind to request major surgery because his schedule would clash with your delivery then get thee to a different doctor and report that one to AMA. [ Reply | More ]

Not true. I was in a hospital in LI laboring for a long time and the drs. pressured me into a c-section because I wasn't progressing fast enough. I kept saying no, until they literally forced me to have one saying my baby will die if I don't, which was a blatant lie. [ Reply | More ]

Eat Sh@t, OP. You have no idea that these high numbers include people like me, who have seizure complications that can put myself and child at risk. I was also told that my pituitary brain tumor was pressing up against my optic nerve and that pressure might make it burst leading to blindness and further complications. You are so ignorant not to think about people like me. There are a lot of us in NYC. Dumb@ss. [ Reply | More ]

Woah, hostility. I'm the NP above (WHO statistics). No one is saying that your C-section was unnecessary. But clearly there are some unnecessary C-sections in NYC, with a rate like that. And considering all the complications you can have from any surgery, it would be nice to get that number down. I think we can all agree on that, right? Wrong? [ Reply | More ]

not even your tumor excuses your rudeness and choice of words.you are high risk OB patient, and among this category(high/very high risk ), the Csection rate MIGHT be even higher than 40%(might, I don't have the % but expect it to be high).this seems to be a discussion about C-section rates in the general NYC population, and yes, seems very high [ Reply | More ]

I understand that higher maternal age and NYC being home to some of the best hospitals tend to attract high risk patients. However, one of the reasons I picked NYDH was bc they had the lowest C-rate. [ Reply | More ]

I had a c-section. I was diabetic (completely diet controlled) so when the baby didn't come out quickly enough, they said that I'm at higher risk for shoulder dystocia and wheeled me to the OR. My problem is that their intervention was based on statistics and not on the reality of how my labor was going. I was feeling fine and the baby heart rate was great. Of course I'm happy to be healthy and have a healthy baby, but I'll never know whether I needed that section or not. Why didn't they let labor go on until there was actually something concerning going on? The system is broken. It forces thousands of women into major surgery because docs fear lawsuits. As a result I don't trust that my doctor made the decision to operate in my best interest. It doesn't matter that short term I'm healthy and so is my baby, since this could have been the outcome of my labor too. And longer term, especially if I get pregnant again (which I plan to do), I and my unborn baby are at increased for all kinds of problems. So yes in my opinion the high C-section rate is f**cked up. Mine was a 10 pounder and I wish I'd gotten at least a chance to push him out. Hospitals place time limits on every stage of labor. Average sized babies can be born within these time limits, but larger than average babies will obviously need more time, so as long as neither baby or mother are in distress, why not give it to them? Rushing to section --a major surgery!-- like it's being done now leads to more problems for moms and future babies down the road. Personally I find it unethical. [ Reply | More ]
