ds only 2.5yo and starting preschool in Sept. I think we would rather hold back than push but we'll see. [ Reply | More ]

NP: in nyc public school, they are really resistant to red shirting. December birthdays push ahead except in rare circumstances [ Reply | More ]

what is red shirting? do you mean that kids with dec bdays will be youngest in the class? [ Reply | More ]

red shirting is holding kids back even though they are the appropriate age for the next grade (or starting school). [ Reply | More ]

My ds has a late November birthday. There are, I think, 4 december birthdays in his K class. None of the parents regret sending their dc to K [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't have. I don't see that being a couple of weeks younger would have made my ds less prepared for K. He loved school this year, had lots of friends, kept up with the work. He did not need another year of preschool! There may be some kids who aren't ready, but I think that's pretty rare, and not all of those kids are necessarily year-end bdays. [ Reply | More ]

I hear of many holding back boys (more so than girls). do you think the ones with very late birthdays are at a disadvantage as far as learning? [ Reply | More ]

I'm no expert, but there will always be kids almost a year younger in any grade. I can only speak for my ds, but he is at least at a level with most of the kids in his class and probably "ahead" of some. The January-Feb. birthday kids are probably more mature in some ways, but he's friends with everyone, behaves well at school..... [ Reply | More ]
