can't beleive you received no responses...post is over a month old. OP, if you do check this, I am mom to interracial DCs and I beleive that it is all about class, not race. Americans are more comfortable with discussing the latter, but with emerging UMS/UC diversity, this will change in our child's generation...and if Obama gets elected president. [ Reply | More ]

While I agree that class is a huge factor & often bigger than race - racism is still alive. When my dd was little - people would ask "where I got her from"? Strangers have said racists things to her father when she is present. I do, however, think that people are more comfortable with people no matter the race if they are from a similar class. I have also been asked where I got dd (I have Zahara Jolie to thank for that), you just have to laugh that off; question was from an ignorant, but not hurtful. You also just chalk up racist remarks to class (as in NO class) when they are made. [ Reply | More ]

NP: ITA. I had some obnoxious kid (old enough to know better!) confuse me for the nanny, and then act hugely shocked that I was dc's mother (I'm Asian, dc looks Caucasian). Best to keep a sens of humor about these things, and realize that most of it comes from ignorance and rudeness, rather than true racism or desire to hurt. [ Reply | More ]

It is still racism, though not the most virulent kind [ Reply | More ]

How would Obama becoming president change a black person's soci/econ status? Are black kids suddenly going to complete HS? [ Reply | More ]

Obama becoming president really drives his message, "only in America could my story even be possible" home for many AA/interracial/Afro-immigrants that are growing up in the US. Many get the message that there is a glass ceiling for them, no matter what they do. This would turn that into a misconception thats been misproven. [ Reply | More ]

DC is interracial. I have nothing to report. There has been nothing about my experiences related to this that is even remotely interesting. Never a comment, or funny look. Either that, or I am totally oblivious. [ Reply | More ]

May depend on which races. Dc are Asian/Caucasian mix, and have not had any negative experiences. Also probably not a big deal in NYC, but might stick out like a sore thumb in a place, like say, Idaho? [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry to hear that. My DC (interracial) have not yet experienced anything like that. Can you give more details? Was the mocker an adult? What neighborhood is her school (assuming you are in NYC?) [ Reply | More ]

I am curious to see what people think of AA/C couples on UES/UWS, my DH and I are thinking of moving there. I'm prone to think it will be more of a class issue than anything else. Any other experiences/thoughts? [ Reply | More ]
