OK so you don't really understand and maybe are new to this so OK I'll explain it: The public school application process is blind, so it really doesn't matter what I'm like or what you think I'm like or if you don't like my being Jewish or if they don't like Jews either. It's only about the scores. That is all they know, the scores. My family's preference not to attend a Christian school as non-Christians is a deeply personal and important choice and it should not inspire your grievance, nor does it require your approval. My child scored very high, the system is flawed, we were given poor placement, I am seeking advice regarding our private school options, I am not a Christian. That is all. [ Reply | More ]

Why would you have dc repeat kindergarten at a private? (I am sure there is a reason and I'm not criticizing, I am curious.) [ Reply | More ]

Because of her Fall birthday, it is the only way to switch out of the public Kindergarten into private the following year. In other words, one year she is old enough for public Kindergarten, the next year she is old enough for private kindergarten. The privates will not push her up to 1st grade just because she did kindergarten at a public school the year before. They will note her birthday and say "She is a Kinergartener". Besides, there are few private spots open for 1st grade, so if we switched into private we might only find K spots available. [ Reply | More ]

Actually...two different dictionaries show either as correct. I'd never SAY "kindergartner", as my child wouldn't attend "kindergartn" or "kindergart". [ Reply | More ]

because she'd never find a 1st grade opening - so she's putting dd behind a year to get her into a private [ Reply | More ]

OP: Not PUTTING her behind a year. Her birthday puts her there on its own. it's where she falls according to the cut-offs. She's a fall kid. She is currently 4 and a half. She could go to public K this fall or private K the following fall. [ Reply | More ]

OP: TAG is a public school. We were accepted to a G&T for public school, and if we want to get out we will need to find a private for the following year. My child did not get in to TAG, my child got in to a district, non citywide G&T. [ Reply | More ]

NP: You really do sound hostile in all your posts. Wouldn't sending your very smart DD to K and then having her repeat K the following year negatively affect her? I would hope you can put your own ego aside and look at this from her point of view. I assume she's in a preschool now -- that would mean 3 schools (and friends, commutes, routines, etc.) in 3 years and that seems like a lot. Also, your clear disdain for the K she got into will be obvious to her -- is that what you want for her first school experience? I urge you to calm down and breathe deeply and think about what's best for your DD. [ Reply | More ]

OP: She's not in preschool now so not sending her to K would mean she would be home the whole year and she's ready for school. I'm planning on going to work in the mornings. I just never thought with her score that we woulnd't get a better offer. [ Reply | More ]

Don't know if you are still reading, but I'd also call the Parents League and ask about nursery schools with pre-k or 5's classes and then call them (b/c you never know, there may be openings -- it's a funny age group and the class size is different and they may have a spot, even though it's late). That way, you'd have support during the K application process. [ Reply | More ]

Agree. I am not sure how attractive an application for a child who has never been to preschool would look to the TT schools in this very competitive environment. It would probably raise some question marks about the family. I would try to get into a private preschool rather than a public K to get some support from a PSD. Also: don't walk in with the attitude of my child is a triple 99 super star. That will be a turn-off to most schools. [ Reply | More ]

you can apply anywhere with those scores. get the goldman book. I would apply to Dalton, all of the girl schools and the hill schools. The best advice I could give you is to apply to a broad range, don't get hung up on the tiers. Competition is too stiff even with good scores and playdate. Also, get a consultant since you will not have a PSD pushing for you. [ Reply | More ]

np: This is excellent advice. Also, you need to tone down the attitude during the private application process. The admissions people can smell entitlement (i.e., my dc has great scores so of course she'll get a "tt" school) a mile a way and it will hurt your chances. There are lots of kids with really high scores. They usually do get a good placement, but it is not as if they have a pick of schools. Consider yourself lucky if you get anything--it is not as if the private process is any better than the public. I've been through both processes with a 99 kid, so I know. And I know at least one 99 who was shut out of privates this year, and part of the reason is the parents just assumed they wouldn't have a problem with those scores. I agree with all the recommendations of schools above. I would also add ECFS to the list. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]
