If your kid tests in to G&T this year but you don't send him, do you need to retest if you want to send him next year? Or is he automatically in having placed in once? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You only get to skip the process if your district does not have K gifted options. [ Reply | More ]

OP: but if i were to send him, then he'd automatically remain in. If i don't send him, does that mean he forfeits his spot? [ Reply | More ]

why would you deny your child a seat in a G&T in the fall? [ Reply | More ]

Hi. I'm in the same boat except that we don't have twins. One was accepted to NEST and the other wasn't offered a spot anywhere. I think that we'll be staying in our gen-ed in Brooklyn. I feel bad for our 99, but I don't think that we can manage the commute, plus having the two kids in school in different boroughs. [ Reply | More ]

OP: yes, that would be a killer commute. What are you going to do about the one who wasn't offered a spot anywhere? Will he or she get into the gen ed school? Sophie's choice, although clearly not that dramatic. [ Reply | More ]

Both will go to 321. I haven't seen Sophie's choice, but perhaps now I will make an effort. [ Reply | More ]

321 is a good school, albeit crowded. Our district doesn't have the equivalent of a 321, unfortunately. [ Reply | More ]

Are you OP? I feel so bad for you. This must be an awful decision. Have you talked with anyone at DOE? [ Reply | More ]

xYes, I'm OP. I tried when I was just trying to get basic info about their policies but have found them so beleaguered and unsympathetic that I haven't asked for any special consideration. They did tell me there was no budging in allowing the lower-scorer into TAG, which would be the only way I'd send them to my district TAG, which happens to be right across the street. It's hard to explain to people that when you have twins, there are dynamics within a family that are uniquely stressful...they compete over whose hair is longer! Imagine something that matters, like who is "smarter" or whatever. Not that that doesn't happen with different age siblings, but twins are exponentially harder in that way. (Easier in other ways, of course.) Thanks for listening. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: if anyone knows a specific human being to speak to at the DOE, I'd love that tip. Thanks. [ Reply | More ]

The reality is that there are few spots available for 1st Grade. You are taking a huge risk if you qualify for K but decide to wait. [ Reply | More ]

OP: meaning that the cutoff will be much higher for G&t in first grade? They guarantee you a spot in K if you score in; is that not the case with first? [ Reply | More ]

Wouldn't you need a child to exit the program to admit a new child? i would think the good programs won't have any spots. [ Reply | More ]

So they're not guaranteeing spots to any kid who tests in? What they told us this year is that if your kid tests in, you get a spot in your district. Is that not the case in 1st grade? In a good program or any program? [ Reply | More ]

Like Greyhound used to do--if the bus was filled up, they'd send out another bus, even if only for a couple of people. [ Reply | More ]

Hi. I'm the 321 Mom from above. Our experience is that it is very difficult to get an older child into G&T programs because there aren't as many seats. I like the but description below though. [ Reply | More ]

OP, if you send the dc w/ an acceptance to G&T this year, you can re-apply for the other dc next year, and s/he will have the sibling preference advantage. [ Reply | More ]

OP: But not if she doesn't score in...right? My concern is that she'll be at the same school indefinitely but not in the TAG program (next to her sister, who is "tagged") and once she's old enough to understand, it will be detrimental. I may be borrowing trouble... [ Reply | More ]

Yes, dc will still have to score high enough on the tests. Is this a citywide or district G&T? How was the dc's score this year? If this year's score was close to the cutoff, I'd prep dc like mad and go for it. If it doesn't work out then you can move the other dc from G&T to the general ed. [ Reply | More ]

Beware. Our dc tested many percentage points lower on OLSAT exam this year (was waitlisted last year, and no spots opened up). Even in higher grades, your dc may have a bad day. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Argh. Our district doesn't have a K G&T option, so we can hang on to our results from this year. Wondering whether to retest and know the outcome may look like yours. Do you know what happened? Grou testing? More questions? [ Reply | More ]

Can't tell, but my guess is that she made a mistake filling in the bubbles (e.g. skipped a question, but did not leave a extra space blank on the sheet). This was for 2nd grade, and they did not have help with filling in the answer sheets. I appealed to see the answer sheet, but not sure if I will ever hear from the DOE. [ Reply | More ]
