Need some advice. Have a 3 week old I'm trying to BF. Had a lot of pain and have been supplementing with about 3 oz of formula a day. Do you have to choose either BM or formula? Can you do both? I'm not willing to pump or feed her any more than I have been because it's too painful. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Have you seen a lactation consultant yet? You shouldn't be in so much pain! It's totally fine to do both formula and bm, whatever works out best for both of you, but do see about the pain. [ Reply | More ]

can't see anything wrong with her latch. my dr thinks it's thrush and i'm taking 10 days of diflucan for that (db on nystatin). i'm on day 5 and the pain is better but far from gone. [ Reply | More ]

I see thrush below - ask for a script for all purpose nipple ointment to go with the thrush treatment - it has antibiotic, antifungal, and pain reliever in it - will likely help with the pain until the thrush clears. [ Reply | More ]

:( well I'm sorry then. breastfeeding issues SUCK! Good luck and don't feel guilty about giving formula, however much you need to stay sane! [ Reply | More ]

the pain is from improper latch you need to see a very good lactation counselor (and there are many who do not know enough). Get a referral from your ped. first thingin the morning. You do not need to make a choice you just need some very competent help. [ Reply | More ]

actually it is not. i've seen two LCs and both say her latch is perfect. the pain is from thrush i think and we're being treated for that. [ Reply | More ]

op: thank you. i never really realized this was an option. how much did you supplement and how long did you BF, if you don't mind my asking? [ Reply | More ]

I supplemented the midnight feed all the time, and would use formula to give me some flexibility when I needed it. Breastfed for 6 months, would have been longer but I needed surgery that could not be delayed. [ Reply | More ]

you can do both. also, try a lactation consulutant. i decided with baby number two that if i needed a break (be it bc of pain or bc i simply needed head space) i would give formula so someone else can feed db. i never got enough pumping. you have to find a balance bt what works for you and your baby.
