Haven't visited 230, but I loved the Children's School when we toured. They have great test scores, and you can't beat the 2 teachers per class. [ Reply | More ]

We chose our local zoned (261) over Children's School. There may be two teachers in every room, but there was little focus when we were there for a 1/2 day with DS (he was a SN child and they needed to see him in environment). DS was more focused than more than 2/3 the other kids, the paras were doing things like making snacks instead of being with their individual students, and the two teachers didn't teach in tandem (the other one was doing paperwork). Kids didn't pay attention during circle time, and this was April (Kindergarten). The upper grades looked amazing - I have no idea how the kids in the class we saw became those students. Wow! these are some great choices. 230 has a proven record in g&t education and the kids go to twain and other great m s from there. On the other hand, I know people who prefer children's school to ps 29. Excellent school. I think other factors should decide--distance and the child's score. If the score was very high, you might want to consider 230. what was the score. If children's school is closer, you should go for it. Either way, you can't lose! Congrats! [ Reply | More ]

You're so wonderfully upbeat. Thanks! The score was top 1%, which is why were thinking our dc should be among other G&T kids. Children's School is closer, tho. When you say 230 has proven record, what do you mean? [ Reply | More ]

230 is probably the oldest g&t school in brooklyn and they have been doing it for a while. It has a great reputation among teachers and I know people in their 30s who went there. They have been doing it for a very long time unlike all the other porgrams in the district. However, children's place is a very special school that should be able to deal with gifted child. Also, if you live closer to children's school, the commute to 230 might take a very long time. The school buss might take 45 min or so to get there. It might not be worth it in a long run. I would say, to go for g&t school if you were zoned for children's school and could change any time. Since this is not possible, this is a very hard choice. did you look in to g&t at ps 38 or 10? Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Children's school does allow for different learners. In theory the model should apply to gifted as well as special needs children; in practice that is not the case. 230 has the oldest G&T in the district, but the school is overcrowded and underfunded and there is the awkwardness of the G&T program being a school w/in a school. 372 is just the opposite, when it comes to special needs kids. Anyway, thanks for your informed opinion! [ Reply | More ]
