is it possible to go to a bank and get a certified check charged to an amex card? buying our first home, and closing costs will be $25-30k....by the time we close we will have enough, but would love to get the points on amex to buy a washer/dryer. anyone btdt? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that's because the banks charge the merchants fees for the "priviledge" of accepting credit cards and the co-op doesn't want to pay those fees. with a Certified check, the bank is certifying that there is enough money in the account to guarantee payment (the check cannot bounce) - they aren't going to certify that you have a big enough credit line to cover the payment.
